We've had a few government shutdowns before. Most federal workers know that they will get back pay once things normalize.
Maybe not this time:

"Officials of unions representing federal workers are concerned about receiving makeup pay
While most workers received back pay after previous shutdowns, there’s no guarantee that will be the case this time around"
Can you imagine? Some of these workers are taking loans out...

I love this part!

“There’s not another company in the United States of America that could force employees to go to work and not guarantee them their pay,”
So why are we ok with the government doing it?
www.yahoo.com...

Would anyone want to be a federal worker after this?

The other consequences of not getting paid:
"Another possible problem for FEMA employees is the risk of missing bill payments, and receiving credit-score downgrades as a result. Reaves explained that many FEMA workers, most making $52,000 to $75,000 a year, have security clearances, which could be revoked if their credit scores fall."

We now know that all fed type of employees are just like the GI's, used till they drop. The politician have it set up to where they don't feel or will never feel the pain without a paycheck. Strange world we live in.

You mean besides the great benefits and good pay? Well fully funded retirement also might be attractive to some considering most companies no longer offer it.

Ocasi-Cortez said:
"It’s completely unacceptable that members of Congress can force a government shutdown on partisan lines & then have Congressional salaries exempt from that decision."

I get her drift, but it won't work, because it won't hurt them. They can wait it out. The rich can handle not being paid for a very long time.

The only way it would work would be to take away something from them that would really hurt, like every day/week the shutdown goes on...

Members of Congress have a lifetime of benefits:
Week 1, take away some of their pension
Week 2, they have to use the VA for Medical care
Week 3, I'm sure there are many other perks we don't know about. Parking, etc.

I can’t fault a person for wanting to work for the government. It’s a job.

But the government is essentially a monopoly that could do well with a little competition.

So if people are not being paid, the tax payers don't need to pay tax.

Simple.

I have to echo others replies about benefits. I have a friend who is an area managed for DOT. He tells me about his defined benefit plan, where the payout is guaranteed, maybe even constitutionally. He puts in a fraction of what I do for my 401k and his payouts will be far far above mine even considering the wage difference.

I believe I have outstanding benefits compared to other similar sectors of private companies around here, but his benefits put mine to shame. The amazing amount of holidays, paid time off, vacation accrual make me drool. Those benefits never hit an accrual wall either, he has around 300 hours of sick time already. When he retired or quits, the entire amount is paid out, or he can simply roll it into a paycheck to be paid out any time he wants. Job protection where it is almost impossible to be fired.

I would have jumped all over a state/federal position but it just seems wrong to receive my paycheck from the citizens where they have no say or spot at the negotiating table.

Not so simple. Try it and see how that works out for you. There is no relationship between the government paying its employees and taxes you owe at the federal level.

Federal work used to be full of people that wanted low stress medium pay jobs with long term security RATHER than living out a chance at the American dream to make great money and accomplish/obtain things of value by working hard and smart and changing when necessary.

That American dream has been robbed so bad that mediocre federal employment rewards are the new American dream. The country has been dumbed down to accept shiddy lives and work. Desperate or greedy immigrants jump right into the pigpen.

I saw the Country when it was wonderful, but my time up relatively soon, today's young need to stop the decline but its hard for them to recognize their own value.

Gangly goofy Ocasio is right on, pointing out...why is congress getting paid during shutdown.

They could pass the budget 1 year in advance and never need shutdown, or just say: during non budget conditions, the previous years budget will be in effect until resolution of budget. Yet they grandstand about the suffering.

They dont want to give up their annual power at budget time...congress has been punking the citizens since before I was born.
You can suffer u peasants, a simple annual budget process is out of the question. Immigration policy -- nope, #u, too complicated. 21 trillion....you expect too much for a mere 21 trillion. Orange man bad.

Don't know. However the old school of Federal workers had awesome benefits, and amazing retirements/pensions- not to mention lots of job security.
