The EU says the US government has changed the bloc's diplomatic status in Washington, in practice downgrading it.

In essence, this seems to be implying that, from now on, the individual countries of the EU have higher status than the European Union entity - e.g. the US will take what Belgium says as of more import than what the EU says on behalf of Belgium?

At the state funeral for the late President George HW Bush, on 5 December, the EU's ambassador was not called up in the usual chronological order, from the longest-serving to the newest ambassador, "but he was called up as the last person", the EU official said.

The previous day, in Brussels, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had questioned the EU's role, in a major policy speech.

Wow. That is, in the political world, a seismic shock. I would imagine that Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic are overjoyed with this.

And I would not doubt it that this was aimed directly at 6-8 countrys that are trying to re-assert their sovereignty and cast off the EU shackles.

The more I think about this the more I'm blown away. For the USA this basically enables them and a potential trade partner to side step the EU.

If the US wants a massive trade deal with Hungary and the Germans and French oppose it it allows Hungary and the USA to ignore the EU and side with Hungary on the grounds that Orban's position gives him final say in the deal.

Am I on track or off base with this?
