Germany: 'Hostage situation' at Cologne train station

A man on Monday took a woman hostage at a pharmacy in Cologne's central railway station.

"Eye-witnesses reported hearing shots, others spoke of smoke bombs, but we cannot confirm any of that so far," a police spokesman told Cologne-based broadcaster NTV.

Authorities ordered an evacuation of the station, which is a main hub for rail traffic across Germany and western Europe. They also appealed to locals to avoid the area and warned of likely disruptions to train services.

Police called on the public to not publish or share images or video of their positions.

The police say the offender was severely injured when they stormed the train station.

While the incident is under control, "operational measures" still continue according to the police. That means the area – including the train station – is still in shut down.

Earlier news station n-tv had claimed the offender had poured inflammable liquid over a 14 year old girl and set her on fire.
