That's the problem though.

Their first mistep was to take a character with an established convention and violate to satisfy what they wanted, not what should be according to the rules of the character.

Dr. Who should never have been a woman to begin with. By doing that, they violate the established canon of the series. They may create a kick ass female character, but she's not Dr. Who.

There is actually more latitude to make that argument.

It depends on whether "james Bond" is supposed to be one single man or a brand for MI-6. Considering the vastly different appearances of all the different actors who have played Bond over the years, it could be argued that "James Bond" is simply a code name that MI-6 uses like 00-7 is designation.

And I could run with argument if they gave the role to someone like Idris Elba.

There are still some kinks to be worked out if they gave it to a woman though.

You may have a point there, but the fact is that it is done and we can either watch the show and see where it goes from here, or dismiss is outright without giving it a chance to prove itself.

What are you on about? There have been female time lords since the 70s...Romana, for instance? That time Lady judge who put the Doc on trial as well, plus a few more. I can't remember a time when it was canon for the regenerating, face changing, two hearted alien to be prohibited from being female in appearance
