We will develop a “culture of sustainability” based on equal access to municipal services for all citizens regardless of their age, religious affiliation, ethnic identity or gender, and reflect this particularly in our budgeting and educational systems;
We will actively involve our citizens and go beyond participatory planning into participatory implementation by supporting and using new approaches like co-production, co-design and co-innovation;
We will re-think the boundaries between public and private services, activities and tasks, and seek to encourage local private and civic engagement;
We will promote social innovation, social enterprises and civic engagement that support the education, training and social inclusion of marginalised groups and immigrants;
We will nurture the “sharing economy”, “collaborative economy” or “civic economy” and other approaches that combine the ideas of entrepreneurship, civic engagement and societal transformation.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions

We spent an amazing day at the Sustainable City, a housing development in Dubai with 3,500 people already living there and it's still not quite finished. This truly is a remarkable achievement, a stark lesson to building contractors the world over. It's not more expensive to build and it's hugely cheaper and more efficient to live in. Spread the word if you know any builders!

It is a modern application of social, economic and environmental sustainability in the built environment achieved through innovative design, stakeholder engagement, and future monitoring to sustain itself. As the first operational Net Zero Energy city in Dubai, The Sustainable City is modelled to become an international showcase for sustainable living, work, education, and recreation.

I think this sounds wonderful. No, really! I know several people who wander on the edge of being homeless, even more elderly with uncertain financial futures, single parents with dead-end jobs that would benefit from such a civilization.
Of course, a caveat: I am too old and set in my ways to join or be a part of such a place. Nope. I can't have anybody telling me what to plant or not plant, or what to build and where. My Darlin' wouldn't stand for that for a second, but for individuals without bush skills or overly attached to their liberty and freedom it sounds like the wave of the future.
I'm sure if everyone's experience within an enclave were similar, the resources could be better managed. Also, if they all had the same space, it would be easier to make the spaces smaller. We're already on our way, you know, with our growing fascination with portable media devices. Just go ahead and plug it in permanently. Click on the sleep ap at night. Perfect!
