Not society that wants this.

It's the government, religions, and the business owners that NEED this.

You and I would rather the population be educated. And you and I are what make up society.

At least that's what I want.

There's a frightening amount of truth to that.

My friends kids have all learned how to read and write and use computers at very young ages. Much younger than those from my generation.

How old are those kids? We actually have something of a problem with the technology skills of generation Z. Computers have gotten so easy to use, and handy GUI's plus cloud services have abstracted away so much of how things work underneath the hood that technology skills are getting worse. Knowing how to install an app on your phone that searches a bunch of tweets for mention of your name is not on the same level as what one had to do to install and properly configure a file parser and then write a matching regex for it to find the information you wanted back in 1990.

A big issue is that these kids will still need to learn how to write with a pen and paper. Handle basic math without a calculator. I see so many kids these days who can't seem to write a complete sentence without using some sort of twitter shorthand.

To say these students are stupid betrays your own stupidity. They are just as intelligent as any group of students anywhere. The education system and society has failed them. They may be ignorant--but not stupid. Educate yourself and learn the difference or yu look stupid yourself.

Congrats on helping to enlighten the masses on the biggest truth about our education system. Kids have very little today of the much more immersive classroom time, than many of us did back in the 60's and 70's. The impersonal, sterile approach to education today is ruining our kids , as well as ruining our statistical advantages with the rest of the world.

There are public school systems in this country that deserve medals for proper education techniques, however you could count them on one hand.

The children have to be motivated to want to learn and the parents have to be involved in their children's lives and education. It's important for the parents to motivate the kids and set a good example for them. Don't simply leave it to the teachers.
Children are an investment, if you don't invest your time in the kids you get dumb kids.

Under 7 years old.

The youngest I have seen is a 3 year old girl that can use a full on tablet like she was born with the knowledge.

Her parents didn't teach this to her ether. She learned it on her own.

It's crazy watching her put in the 10 letter password and then scroll through youtube videos to find the ones about animals that she likes. And that's not on the tablet that's on the desk top pc.

And I know she can read the titles of those videos because she tells me what they say.

It's amazing how smart my friends kids are.

Arn't you the one that said their kid impressed them with some piano skills?

I think this generation coming up will prove to be one of the smartest that has ever been.

Now if only they can hurry up and invent cold fusion before I die.

Do you know how to chisel words out in stone?

without using some sort of twitter shorthand.

language is always changing this is just the most recent change. We as the older guys should except that change not seek to disparage those that bring it about.
You understand that 100 years ago the english language looked completely different right?

The fact that kids have access to computers to do the math means they do not think they need to memorize the principles. When you do math in school without the aid of a calculator, it conditions you to learn to think and to organize your thoughts and practices. The new system is not working, it can't unless they get rid of computers and calculators. We could not even use a slide rule to do our math when we went to school, and look at what our generation created. We were smart enough to employ those who had ideas and could build the technology that has been created, technology that is coming back to haunt us lately. Maybe we really were not that smart to create that stuff afterall. My generation could not fathom how technology could destroy our kids and grandkids.

Hard to do when both parents have to work just to pay the bills.

What we need is a system that allows more free time for parents to spend with their children.
8 hour work days is as much to blame for this as anything else.

No they don't.

You like being away from your family most of the day while making other people rich?
You do realize that your boss gets to spend more time with his family because of your labor right?

if you are not busy 24/7 let me know how you do it

Could you reword this so that it makes since?
Is this a question a statement, what?
