providing written answers is not cooperation?

Cooperating with what?

No one is. It's the consequences of that action and what led up to it that is the issue. Only Comeys family really care that he got fired. The rest are only concerned with why.

In January, Mr. Trump’s lawyers gave Mr. Mueller several pages of written explanations about the president’s role in the matters the special counsel is investigating.

Correct. They provided "explanations".

They did not cooperate and allow Mueller to question Trump directly.

Again, context is key.

Grab the bait, the tackle, and lets troll the deep waters for the big fish. It been clear since the beginning that this is a fishing expedition, and Trump and his lawyers should refuse any and all questions of this sort.

Why?

Trump has been tweeting, shouting and complaining for over a year that there is nothing illegal or illicit that occurred?

These questions appear straight forward and an opportunity for Trump to clear his name and move on to more important issues.

The Special Counsel is conducting an investigation on behalf of the People of the United States of America.
Trump can simply honestly answer the questions put to him an he will be fine.

Dozens and dozens of people, who don't have the added advantage of Presidential Immunity, have happily testified under oath in this investigation.

How do you envision any of these questions a trap if honestly answered? He has not done anything wrong, correct?

It's not called a fishing expedition unless you know there is something to be caught.

Mueller cannot impeach the president.

You'll find the questions in the New York Times article. Too many to do a copy/paste here. The opening paragraph:

The special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, recently provided President Trump’s lawyers a list of questions he wants answered in an interview. The New York Times obtained the list; here are the questions, along with the context and significance of each. The questions fall into categories based on four broad subjects. They are not quoted verbatim, and some were condensed.

NYT Article Containing The Questions: www.nytimes.com...

Some of those are designed to be a TRAP!

This is one instance where President Trump should do like Hillary did with questions that a Federal judge forced her to answer in 2016. Of the 27 questions, she answered 20 of them with, "I do not recall".

But Trumps lawyers are not the ones who the questions are for.

That is pretty simple.

A team of lawyers providing written statements on behalf of the President is not the President answering questions.

Apart from that we have no indicator that even those lawyer generated responses addressed the questions that were asked.

No one asked for and no one provided and no one recieved written answers.
Written answers eliminate the possibility of follow up questions. A tool that is important in any interrogation. Mueller probably doesn't want written answers.
In fact Mueller expressed the idea that he doesn't really need trumps answers at all but thought he might want to tell his side of things just last week when they busted Cohen's office and trump said all cooperation was over or what ever that was.

It does not appear they were asked anything. Your source only states that questions were created through the negotiations.

So they did not provide answers. They provided explanations on their own.

Do you not understand the difference?

that must break your heart?

No. That is the way the system is designed to work.

It breaks my heart that people such as yourself do not understand the basics of how our excellent system works.

A fishing expedition would be to question a sitting President in regards to a real estate deal and then ask him if he was having an affair with a WH aide.

All of these questions are straight forward, narrowly relevant to Mueller's investigative mandate and have simple honest answers.

They look like backyard softball questions, structured to give Trump an opportunity to go officially on record with things he has repeatedly said or claimed publicly already.

For anyone who had been even remotely, somewhat honest in what they have publicly claimed, answering these questions would be a walk in the park.

Mueller isn't looking for impeachable offenses. He's investigating Russian interference in the election AND because he acts like a guilty fool...obstruction of justice.
Maybe he really is just an idiot and not guilty of anything.
