I don't think anything recently "happened" in the U.S. economy to trigger these tariffs against China. But I vividly recall how the trade imbalance with China is one subject that Donald Trump would focus on during radio/TV interviews, even before he announced his candidacy for President.

I think that trade imbalance with China is simply something that President Trump has been wanting to fix for 10 years. Now he has the position and tools to try his theories.

Change your post title it's misleading! The Chinese are Commies! There is no free trade when you deal with Commies!

Japan fitted in well to the world economic system as are true capitalists like us. The Chinese are anything but like us, they are COMMIES! Never gonna work in the world system, hats off to Trump for defending from the red peril.

My post title is 100% accurate from the U.S. consumer perspective. We operate in a free-market environment. How much of our free-market should the US government manipulate...i.e. take away? If consumers/businesses/factories collectively decide to STOP BUYING China-produced products, that would be great. No govt manipulation needed.

Yeah, this really pisses me off.

I'm a little old, but I would gladly enlist and grab some of the best shooters in my state to handle these country wrecking sleeze balls.

I've watched the construction materials industry be completely decimated over the last 20 years.

And not just that industry, almost every other industry with a product.

This is the stuff wars are spawned from.

I think your fear stems from a misunderstanding of economics. If China stops purchasing U.S. treasuries and the "U.S. tanks" like you fear, what happens to all the U.S. bonds China holds ? They become useless. Now why on Earth would China want that to happen. Secondly, the largest holder of the U.S. debt are the U.S. citizens, not China. However, China has the largest in terms of countries. If China cuts back, it will hurt a bit, but will not cripple us.

Another point I want to make is, yes some industries will hurt, but sometimes for long term sustainability one needs to make sacrifices in the short term. A vaccine hurts, but is much better than meningitis, everyone would agree. But our society is addicted to immediate results and kicking the can down the road, and dont understand the importance and value of long term strategic decisions. U.S. imposed $50 billion in tariffs, China only $3. They know they are playing with fire. 2% increase in unemployment in China would be very very bad. Since U.S. doesn't manufacture anything, we have all to gain. They put themselves in this position. Game theory/prisoners dilemma is a Biatch. Win-win in the LONG TERM for USA.

P.S. United States is not considered to be a free market nation, its mixed capitalism. Cheers.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh very true from our side of the fence in the West I agree

But the Chinese have infiltrated our system, they have become part of it but this has no benefit to our communities that are dying off due to Commie competitipn. They've infiltrated our system, indeed they got into our mindset that they belong in the world econimc system but don't play it fair. The Communist party subsidises their factories and now they got all our gold. Too far gone, time to stop them, Trump is the natural voter reaction to Commies let loose on us all.

I'm old mate and been in engineering in UK all my life. I'd happily press the button to nuke China if I could, they destroyed my countries engineering they don't play it fair. Nuke em, I don't honestly see any benefit around my parts to having China exist at all.

Your looking at it wrong. We have a cost of living set and rising.

Our cost of living requires jobs, companies won't pay our cost of living expenses if they can have someone else do it for 2% less than our cost of living.

If you don't stop corporations from leaving the country, no one will have work.

It's too bad the corporations aren't smart enough to understand they won't have any buyers for their products if we are broke.

This whole thing is pretty obvious to business people, so I wonder if this isn't all planned to weaken American workers, and not just a simple politician payoff for gibs scheme.

It is actually the only purpose of the gov, to protect our interests.

This isn't rocket science. China just began trading oil in the yuan:

www.aljazeera.com...
In an attempt to reshape the global oil market, the Shanghai International Energy Exchange has launched the first crude futures contracts priced in Chinese renminbi, or yuan.

China, the world's biggest oil importer buys around nine million barrels of oil every day and it wants to use its own currency to price the world's most-traded commodity.

Why do you think the Chinese tariffs just happened? It's obvious!!

Donald Trump is so #ing out of his league compared to Putin and Xinping it's frightening.

Our leader is a filandering game show host and casino owner that trolls his enemies on Twitter.

Roger on that one.

Yeah, it has gotten pretty bad here too. These policies have wrecked the backbone of the US.

They have not only ran out businesses, factories, and other jobs, they have turned around and snatched up a lot of real estate here.

They are all over Cali in lambos, running house prices up to 500k+ in little time, displacing locals, they are in schools, institutions, tech industry, come over as spies on visas, etc, etc

Their is also a huge problem with them running product out of cali under us ip addresses afyer posing as US companies, but shipping direct from China. That's the Lambo kids you see, and I mean kids, 16 years old, scamming parents paid for them.

I see a ton of these crap businesses on Amazon, they are usually the cheapest deals.

The U.S. government says, "Do it our way, or pay a big $$$ penalty!"

Isn't that what the president is saying to China?

Yes.. The President is saying to China, raise your prices, or we'll penalize you for sending things here that are too cheap. Is that how you read it?

Heres why look at the numbers.

en.m.wikipedia.org...

Thankyou for that comprehensive chart. It looks like China really ramped up their steel production in 2007. A big global demand for their product must have materialized around that time.

A big global demand for their PRICE materialised at that time, from companies who don't care about quality or customers, only profit.

Only care about profits...... Hmm sounds like capitalism to me, when you have unlimited customers you don't care about quality, this is what happens when capitalism goes unchecked, it's a simple case of power corrupts.

China did nothing. It was the US companies that sacked all the US workers and ORDERED the goods from Chinese companies.

Your own rich elite did this. But oh deary me, blame the poor Chinese worker.

Your own people sold you out.

Based on what? The fact that China didn't just start actively begin threatening the petrodollar? In a real way? That's important to our economy. Like it or not. I don't.

He's a useless talking point. He mentioned a meeting with Un and Un immediately went to Beijieng.

Powerful.

Why doesn't Trump stop being a hypocrite and start by bringing his products back to the US for manufacturing. And his daughter can do the same.

If The President isn't willing to do this, why should anyone else?

All this trade war is going to do is increase the prices of items we buy here.
