"I started to lose track of where we would put 8's and 2's after a while," Anderson said. "We had a great set decorator who has actually done all three of my movies, and I let him know that I wanted to do this throughout the movie, and he would surprise me every once in a while. He'd come up to me on the set and say, `Can you see it?' I'd say, `Where is it?' and he'd hidden one somewhere. We were always having fun with where to put them throughout, deciding what scenes they should be in and how to make them out of rope or something like that."
The numbers refer to the Bible verse, although "I have to admit that I didn't really know (the frog phenomenon) was in the Bible when I wrote it," he said. "I knew it just after the fact. My first introduction to (the frog occurrence) came from Charles Fort, who's a great turn-of-the-century writer and skeptic who wrote about odd phenomena, UFOs, this sort of thing."
Fort's book "Wild Talents" appears on the library table where young quiz-kid Stanley (Jeremy Blackman) studies, as do books called "Strange Weather Occurrences" (obvious meaning if you've seen the movie) and "History of Freemasonry." A friend clued me in on assorted Freemasonry references, which include symbols all over the quiz show set and on the quizmaster's ring and Ricky J. offering the Freemason farewell, "We met upon the level and we're parting on the square."
"That's fun too, isn't it?" Anderson said, laughing. "I'm really happy to hear you ask me about it. It means people are seeing it because the Mason symbols are subtle. . .
"I guess I have a particular fascination with the Masons. I certainly don't know as much as I want to do. I'm about to actually go on a little kick of researching them a little bit more and finding out more and more and more."
The film's Freemason-related themes apparently involve old men, power and TV, but Anderson didn't want to say any more.
"I'll just become a guy who talks too much about his movie," he said. "You can always ending up ruining the pleasure for people when they hear the director spout off about it."
Right. Now how about that title? Magnolia flowers appear throughout the movie, Magnolia is the name of a street that several characters pass through at a key moment, and one rumor had Anderson previously living on that street, though the filmmaker said he only lived nearby. My friend suggested that the magnolia is a significant flower in Masonry.
"Hmmm," Anderson mused. "That's a good one to research."

Sounds like he recognized you, but your amnesia shield was preventing you from knowing what he was talking about. You should have asked him for clarification.

I highily recommend watching the movie Dark City from 1998. The overall plot is kinda similar to the Matrix but way more fleshed out. The YT channel below has a pretty good summary of the movie.
