"Happy Martin Luther King day to a true hero. This day means more today than it ever has. We all must honor the spirit of his fairness and equality and tireless search for justice," Handler wrote on Twitter. "It is up to white people to honor Dr. King, and to think about what it must be like to not [sic] be white."

I would have just let this lie there, but I can't. It's just too damn ironic.

Dr. King wanted one thing. For everyone to be equal. He wanted people to look at a young black boy the same as they would a white boy. We wanted an end to racial division. I dare say, he would have massively facepalmed Mrs. Handler today.

Way to miss the point by the largest distance possible sweetie.

So she wants to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Day by focusing on the color of ones skin instead of the contents of ones character.

The people TODAY that are OK with MLK Jr. are up in arms over Kapernick.

Same. Damn. Thing.

MLK - Letter From a Birmingham Jail Important POINTS are in bold

I must make two honest confessions to you, my Christian and Jewish brothers. First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection. I had hoped that the white moderate would understand that law and order exist for the purpose of establishing justice and that when they fail in this purpose they become the dangerously structured dams that block the flow of social progress. I had hoped that the white moderate would understand that the present tension in the South is a necessary phase of the transition from an obnoxious negative peace, in which the Negro passively accepted his unjust plight, to a substantive and positive peace, in which all men will respect the dignity and worth of human personality. Actually, we who engage in nonviolent direct action are not the creators of tension. We merely bring to the surface the hidden tension that is already alive. We bring it out in the open, where it can be seen and dealt with. Like a boil that can never be cured so long as it is covered up but must be opened with all its ugliness to the natural medicines of air and light, injustice must be exposed, with all the tension its exposure creates, to the light of human conscience and the air of national opinion before it can be cured.

EDIT...

Let's be real. If MLK was alive TODAY, doing what he did TODAY...a ton of people here would denounce him.

If this is the case? Let's just remove this holiday or reinvent it?

Handler sure isn't honoring King.

I have a dream that one day people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but the content of their character.

Handler has none.

Cuz as we ALL know...

MLK fought for the equality of character. The whole "skin color" thing didn't matter at ALL...right?

I don't remember water fountains with "GOOD CHARACTER" and "POOR CHARACTER" ... you?

I think Chelsea Handler feels relevant because she has heard of politicians having 'handlers'. Someone really should explain the difference to her.

Apparently I DO -- because I actually READ and understand and study the man, his work, life.

If you had BOTHERED to read the excerpt from the letter I linked above you might learn something NEW today!

Honestly, she is Not going to happen in politics, and frankly I don't care what she has to say.....BTW, she still looks like a guy. What is the point of becoming a woman, if your going to look like a dude anyway....and BTW I am gay, and people on ATS think I am a "libtard" just because I don't fall for trumps lies, never have, never will, and I did not once vote for Obama. But I can smell trumps hot air from wherever he is golfing. I am not a "libtartd".

SAD...

So many here think MLK was some color-blind, neutral guy. He was fighting for black people against an UNJUST SYSTEM.

Yeah. Race was there. PERIOD.

White people picked HIM as the "face of the civil rights movement" because compared to Malcolm X, MLK's message was a LOT less threatening and easy to swallow.

Oh, he was ALSO a socialist

Another one to miss the boat. It did matter, the point was it shouldn't. We should stop focusing on color and start focusing on the content of one's character.

So we honor that by focusing on color ... Makes sense.

It sure is sad.

If you want people of color to be treated as equals.

Stop treating them like victims.

I love Dr. King. His words bring me wisdom and comfort even today.

I don't stop on any particular day to remember him. I do remember him weekly in the course of my life.

He really was a great mind.
