If you read through this thread you will find that this was decided on in 1995.
And that trump didn't do anything. Nothing was done. In 6 months trump will have the chance to do something. We will have to wait and see if he does.

Here's the info I just learned.
In 1995 the congress officially declared that they would move the embassy to jeruslem.
Right after that then president bill clinton signed a waver that would table that move for six months.
Six months later he signed that waver again. This waver has been signed by every US president every six months for the last 22 years. Trump signed that waver in june and then again this month. So nothing can happen with this move for at least another six months and at that time My guess is just like all those who came before him he will sign it again.

Trump is not the one who decided that the US would recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel. Bill clinton and the 1995 congress did. All trump did today was tell us about something that happened 22 years ago and then immediately signed a waver tabling the move for another 6 months.

I feel like a sucker for even caring about this.
Why the hell would trump go on tv and tell us about something good that bill clinton had done , claim it as his idea and then kick it down the road for another six months??
Here is an article about it I will quote the part that pertains to this thread.
www.businessinsider.com...

After his speech, Trump signed a proclamation recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, as well as the waiver delaying the move another six months.

This is the wiki about the 1995 deal that specifically states that the USA recognizes jerusalem as the capital of israel.
en.wikipedia.org...

The act also called for Jerusalem to remain an undivided city and for it to be recognized as the capital of the State of Israel

Since passage, the law was never implemented because of opposition from Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama[5], who view it as a Congressional infringement on the executive branch's constitutional authority over foreign policy

So far trump as done the same thing by signing the six month waver. Will he sign it again in june 2018? We are just going to have to wait and see.

I am not sure if anyone else has asked this but what advantage does this change have for America? Do we gain anything out of moving the embassy? What do we have to lose by making this change? Do the benefits outweigh the losses? I am not taking sides but I do not immediately see any real advantage to be gained by this move.

Thanks,
Dennis

There are no advantages except to appease Israel's far right government & its allies like AIPAC. It proves that the US won't be an honest broker w/the Palestinians because an embassy move to Jerusalem signals that the "2 State Solution" is dead. (ETA: I guess this would also help the individual politicians involved since their fundraising from AIPAC and other Zionists would likely increase.)

It helps to know that Netanyahu has been financially backed for years by the GOP mega-donor & billionaire Sheldon Adelson. Adelson also owns the most heavily circulated daily newspaper in Israel, so he's a perfect mixture of media, wealth, and political connections.

Called it.

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that the United States could no longer be a mediator in efforts to end Israeli-Palestinian conflict after its decision to recognize Israel as the capital of Israel.

“From now on, it is out of the question for a biased United States to be a mediator between Israel and Palestine, that period is over,” Erdogan told a news conference after a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul.

“We need to discuss who will be a mediator from now on. This needs to be tackled in the UN too,” Erdogan said.

Turkey's Erdogan says U.S. can no longer be a mediator between Israel and Palestinians

At least with the previous US administrations, we could pretend to be unbiased enough to be the main mediator between Israel & the Palestinians. But if the international community no longer acknowledges our "mediation", it may wind up being the EU, UN, China and/or Russia who ends up being the new mediator.

That would actually be much worse for Israel since the EU and UN General Assembly are far more sympathetic towards the Palestinians. And if the Trump administration really does try to pull out of the UN, that would leave Israel in even more of a bind since we're the main country that blocks pro-Palestinian & anti-Israeli resolutions there. I'm actually a bit giddy now just thinking about this.
