Black Rod is Now a Woman ending 650 years of Tradition , Tradition be Damned

Sarah Clarke is currently the Championships Director at the All England Lawn Tennis Club but in the new year she will become the new Black Rod , a role that for 650 years has been held by a man .... which is of course a bad thing in this era of diversity so now that wrong has been righted and equality achieved.

I welcome our new female overlord (not really) but wonder if the chamber door will still be slammed in her face or whether that will be construed as sexist , perhaps the ceremony could be changed to have the door being gently closed as she approaches and the new Black Rod politely asking to be admitted to the chamber rather than the overtly masculine banging of the rod on the door demanding to be let in.

Hopefully when the despicable Bank of England governor Mark Carney stands down in 2019 that role too will be handed to a woman , how can a man be trusted to handle our finances in this modern age.

I'm all for progressing as a society, but it's sad when it kills long held traditions like this.

We are who we are today because of the things we have learned through history. Dismantling history almost seems regressive rather than progressive. You can't change what happened then. it can only shape the future. Trying to forget it only causes history to repeat itself.

Some traditions are important. This tradition is about reminding that the Commons is independent and the incumbent Sovereign has no jurisdiction over the pre-eminence of Parliament.

The black rod is what is used to bash on the door to summon Ministers to hear the Queen's Speech. It's black and it's rod shaped.

EDIT TO ADD - While there has never been a woman (until now) who has held the post, the tradition is not dependent on a woman doing it. It's the symbolism that is key to these things.
