(The set up)
There are so much misunderstanding, propaganda , revisionist history and just flat out lies circulating about the civil war...
You have people who play up the the United States morality as "going to war for freedom , to free the slaves!!"
Which couldn't be further from the truth.. the north never sends their sons to die, nor did Lincoln or the US government have the political will..for
emancipation..
You have people who play up the South's morality by claiming "the civil war wasn't about slaves, it was about states rights!!"
Except it was about states rights to keep slaves.. ALL politics back then revolved around slave and free states..but not because the free states
thought slavery was a moral abomination..
It was because slavery killed your middle class and buisness owners can't compete with slave labor..
(The actual point)
I think the real problem is we have forgotten the most important part..
WHO STARTED IT!!!
Who actually started the Civil War?? I don't mean what group started it.. I mean who specifically???
What individuals does the paper trail of history pin it on??
Robert E Lee(if you don't know who he is your in the wrong thread)??
Jeff Davis(president of the confederacy) ??
Nathan Beford Forest??
Well no..
At least the first two thought rebellion was a HORRIBLE idea and they fought/served out of a misplaced sense of honor..
The actual perpetrators and who history should remember were a small group of southern slave traders who wanted to reopen the international slave
trade..
Pro confederate people like to point to the fact that Lincoln had NO desire to address the southern slave trade as proof the Civil War wasn't fought
over slavery, but that is only half true..
Theyvare right Lincoln and the North were NOT comming to free the slaves..
But just because Lincoln wasn't going to do it , doesn't mean the south doesn't think he will...
The Confederacy WAS FORMED out of the FEAR Lincoin would abolish slavery.. IT JUST WASNT TRUE...
Or at least it wasn't true until black soldiers and abolitionists made the war about slavery..
So why did the south think he the US was gonna invade????
Well because these idiots convinced them Lincoln was going to do exactly that.. They were called "Fire Eaters" .
In American history, the Fire-Eaters were a group of radical pro-slavery Southerners in the Antebellum South who urged the separation of Southern
states into a new nation, which became known as the Confederate States of America. The dean of the group was Robert Barnwell Rhett of South Carolina.
They sought to reopen the international slave trade, which had been illegal since 1808.[1]

Notable Fire Eaters...
TextWilliam Barksdale Joseph E. Brown John C. Calhoun James Dunwoody Brownson DeBow, publisher of DeBow's Review Thomas C. Hindman Laurence M.
Keitt William Porcher Miles John A. Quitman John J. Pettus, Governor of Mississippi, who would lead the state in secession[3][4] Robert Rhett Edmund
Ruffin Nathaniel Beverley Tucker Louis Wigfall William Lowndes Yancey Roger Atkinson Pryor Maxcy Gregg
Using effective propaganda against 1860 presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln, the nominee of the anti-slavery Republican Party, the Fire-Eaters
were able to convince many southerners of this. However, Lincoln, despite abolitionist sentiment within the party, had promised not to abolish slavery
in the Southern states, but only to forbid it in the territories.[2] They first targeted South Carolina, which passed an article of secession in
December 1860. Wigfall, for one, actively encouraged an attack on Fort Sumter to prompt Virginia and other upper Southern States to secede as well.
The Fire-Eaters helped to unleash a chain reaction that eventually led to the formation of the Confederate States of America and to the American Civil
War. Their influence waned quickly after the start of major fighting.
A small handful of individuals making a power play and roping everyone else into it with them... like just about every other war in history...
It was started by politicians who thought expanding slavery would profit them personally and were afraid Lincoln might step on that.
Lincoln had fought to keep any new western states that were added to the union to be free states. Before Lincoln's election the Slave states democrats
had the majority in congress.. but if they added a bunch of new slave states. Then that congressional majority would evaporate..
Which would do two things..
1) it would hypothetically given the free states enough of a majority to abolish slavery..
Something there wasn't even remotely enough political will to do..
2) screw up their plan to reopen a booming international slave trade that would supply western expansion with slave labor..
They hyped the people up to fear something THAT WAS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN because they felt their buisness opportunity was being threatened..
They went back to their home towns and rabble roused everyone into rebellion ..they made up every lie they could think of..
A REBELLION ALL THE PEOPLE WE CURRENTLY BLAME KNEW WAS A HORRIBLE IDEA AND ADVISED AGAINST..
(The moral)
It is the same tired old propaganda tactic still popular to this day..
They Used demogogary to hype up the population with a slippery slope argument.. a logical fallacy that would get you laughed out of a high school
debate class..
It was the "They are comming to get your guns!" Of the day...
Lincoln says he is gonna make any new states free states...
The southern fire eaters convince everyone "they are comming to free all the slaves and make your daughters marrry them!!"
The democrats say "we wanna ban any new assault rifles!"
The GOP convinces everyone " they are gonna ban all guns and go house to house confiscating them!!"
And I'm not saying we should ban all new assault rifles.. just that it is the same broken @$$ slippery slope argument in either case...
