Bazinga!!! It's a small percentage that want nationalist socialism. They don't align correctly with a nationalist capitalist but hey they still have a right to gather and speak. Ignoring Nazi's works better than confronting them though. So I will question how they were allowed to be confronted first.

I am a conservative leaning person that used to participate and coach collegiate policy debate.

This is a group that is on the left of even normal people in academia.

I was tolerated and joked with most of the time I was there.

After Trump won, my local school had a tournament about a week later.

I met old friends, and some of the best ones still welcomed me.

But the hostility was intense. I watched people almost in tears screaming that if the debate community couldn't stop trump, what is the point? I was shouted at for even bringing up any points as to why Trump wasn't a racist, or why Hillary was terrible.

Luckily, that was a one time gig and I won't have to tolerate it unless I want to.

But I could see how that would wear a person down.

At the same time, this is no different from other ideological circles. Trump has sacked all kinds of people.. Yes, in hyper liberal enclaves such as I live in, and the professor in question, questioning certain narratives can have negative social or employment effects. But that's been true in many conservative or right wing orgs and societies in history too.

I agree. Antifa caused this mess. No one deserves a car driven through them but I fear things are orchestrated and will only get worse in the future.

I'm not going to say ANTIFA caused it.

Either group is capable of causing trouble on their own, but since neither group was on their own, we'll never know if they were going to be violent in isolation or not.

Together, they clearly were violent, and I don't think we can say where it all started and it doesn't matter necessarily.

The only whiff of high ground to be had is that I'll bet none of the counter protests had permits, but even so ...

Well shoot, according to some of our howling resident folks, doesn't that mean they should be hung, burned, and then their ashes sown with lye or salt or whatever it is you do with traitors? We should also scour all traces of them from the public record, even going so far as to remove their birth certificates from existence.

Make it like they've never ever lived.

Oh, I guess we might let a photo exist in a museum of American shame somewhere.

No , Virginia hasnt declared war against the US Federal government .......Yet

Tried that once.....didn't go so well.

They have their own flag?

Weren't they just protesting the Confederate flag that symbolizes rebellion?

These hypocrites are disgusting.

What if a mob showed up, lassoed that flagpole and tore it down? Wouldn't they just love that? That is what they stand for after all.

Oh that's crap!

We've gone over this ... they had the legal permits to march and demonstrate. No one likes that, but the laws allowed for it.

There were maybe a couple hundred or so. Had they simply been mainly ignored, they would have looked stupid. Had they been left alone and actually done something, then you could clearly blame them all you like, but the truth is that the counter protesters showed up like they have now for several years intending to start trouble with a group expecting them to do that.

There are no clean hands in this.

There was no "seige" just two groups of #ssholes causing problems for everyone else because no one can just let well enough alone anymore.

They granted the permit because the ACLU forced their hand. It doesn't mean they weren't unwelcome. Counter protesters showed up because Nazis showed up in their town! And the clean hands are the ones who lived there, not wanting their town to host a Nazi rally.

I never once, in my years as a member on ATS, expected to be a member of a site that overwhelmingly acts as an apologist vehicle for #ing Nazis.

I think I'm almost done here. I feel literally sick from sadness realizing the true character of such a large swath of membership here.

I keep hearing this.

Take a step back and breathe.

98% of what people are saying is defending nazis is just people defending the disgusting pigs right to free speech.

Antifa is also a disgusting organization. The believe in a mix of communism and anarchy. The want the elimination of the US government. They label anyone they disagree with as nazis and the beat them in heinous ways.

Calling them out is not defending nazis.

I understand the emotional hatred off nazis, I share it too. But that doesn't mean we can ignore their rights, and reminding people of that is not defending them at all.

I have seen person after person celebrate, defend and call for violence of all nazis. I have seen many of these same people call me, the entire white house, many ATS members and many others nazis that couldn't be further from it.

But I am not gonna get frustrated and leave the site.

I try to discuss why I strongly disagree with them. And most times it get nowhere.

But I still think its worth staying for the good people, who are most of the members.

The problem is where I live, many regressive leftists claimed academic freedom while in reality attacked anyone who disagrees with them. At least with Conservatives, they are pretty honest about it.

when the Trump flag was being flown by members of the armed forces a few months ago, that's when the cry to fight against divide should have been sang, instead of the plethora of S&Fs the thread received ; maybe, just maybe we wouldn't be here today.

I would dig to see your reply to that thread, but I don't give two squirts of piss...

blah blah blah... the left hypocrisy... save it. what do you call hypocrites calling other people hypocrites... lying hypocrites.

So flying a flag of the President (which is dumb) is the same as flying the flag of an organization with a stated goal of taking down the government?

It's so disheartening to see people ignore history and fall into the same traps over and over again.

Glad we can agree on what's happening.

And we've covered that territory too.

Can you honestly think that white supremacists ... well racist of any stripe ... are actually welcome anywhere?!

But if someone like Louis Farrakhan and his group can get permits to march and protest, then so can this group. I think they're about on a level when we talk racist scum in term of rhetoric.

You don't get to confirm or deny a permit to protest based on whether or not a group is welcome. In fact, when we are talking about political speech, odds are that *no* protest group that is demonstrating in protest of a government action is really welcome because it means they aren't happy with what the government officials are doing.

Honestly, as weird as it is to type this, the ACLU got it right in this case.

I get that you hate Nazis. I think if you looked back with a clear head, most all of us do, but that still doesn't change the fact that in America, they get to march around and be Nazis under the principle of equal treatment under the law and freedom of speech.

You should be happy there were only a couple hundred. The way everyone was carrying on over this, I thought there were hundreds, thousands even.

Hell, I cannot believe what is happening.... and it isn't just on this board forum either.

Rage virus indeed. You have to give the media credit. Their performance and success in this endeavor / exercise has exceeded expectations.

interesting. I'm sorry that you experienced that hostility. I don't think that it is constructive for many liberals to be so vitriolic towards Trump voters or even those who just criticized Clinton. As to debate, It is something I wish I had done when I was younger, and seems like a great experience and maybe even training.

Yeah, I work with 90% former Democrat election campaign staff: local, national, state, etc. My living reality is being around these people. Honest activism and disagreement with establishment politics is totally dis-incentivized at my work, and those who get ahead tow a perfect "resistance" line, not to mention basically be apologists for everything DNC. My work life is right in the middle of all this stuff. There are some who are aware of things or more critical, but it's in the minority.

wont be long til the lefties replace that flag with the hammer and sickle

Do you think they will be able to do it before the rightist can replace it with the swastika?

To be honest, I've seen both sides flying both of those respective flags. The rhetoric in your post (and I'm not blaming you, really) and the rhetoric in seemingly every aspect of current American political discourse is driving people who'd normally have nothing to do with either side start to take pride in one or the other, whether or not they fully believe it.

I have a hard time believing that half the people I've seen marching in crowds with a communist or anarchist flag actually believe in communism or anarchism. And likewise, half the people I see marching in crowds with a rebel or nationalist flag believe in that either.

However when things get so polarized, people start to embrace their labels, whether they earned those through deeds or simply from false labelling. It's sad, in a way.

This is all getting dangerous at an exponential pace. And sadly, I think we're well past the point of no return. Everything I've seen over the past 5-10 years points to complete breakdown. And I've been avoiding accepting this for awhile, but the past couple years show people are thirsty for blood in America. And that's scary in any situation, let alone when it's directed at other Americans.

This country scares the sh!t out of me sometimes.

In your great expanse of knowledge , has anyone or any group been allowed to raise any other flags at any public places before ? Anywhere ? Have anyone even tried ?
