We should pray to God it's mental. If it was extremely political anger that would cause a normal person to kill innocents, he probably isn't the only one.

He supported Hillary in 2016 and apparently switched to Bernie. Fact is he hated the GOP and Trump. His Twitterfeed and Facebook page speak volumes in that regard. I'm still not convinced that's the real motive though.

I see many people put the blame on the left in various threads for the things I have mentioned, hence my comment.

This man believed the republicans in the nation's capital were evil enough to deserve being shot. This isn't a conclusion he came to on a whim or through judgement of character, but from a certain subset of political tribalism and propaganda.

Bernie Sanders I think actually gave the best statement on the topic btw. I just saw it.

I think we'll see a temporary lull in the vitriol but it'll pick up again soon enough. The sad truth is that the level of animosity and yes, hyperbole, we hear in current political rhetoric, is nothing new in the US and far from unique to Americans. It's much worse in other places in the world right now and our own past is littered with examples that make the current state of affairs seem tame.

Hell, just look at the last administration. Remember ("RINO") McCain trying to calm down a supporter who was hysterical about Obama? The claims of FEMA camps of him being a crypto-Muslim plant of the Muslim Brotherhood sent to enact Sharia law? The rise of the Tea Party just one month after the inauguration? (which was kicked off by a member of the media and extensively promoted by right-wing media) Right up to the election, there was "speculation" that Obama might enact martial law and try to stay in power.

I was just personally blamed for this lunatic asshole shooting people, in this very thread.

I don't have any idea where we go from here. I'm just rambling myself. I think that part of it might have something to do with people learning how to be passionate about their disagreements without resorting to not only violence, but the hate that leads to violence.

Like us. We disagree on 90% of everything but we have a mutual respect.

I can tell you that as of this moment, I'm not at all inspired to debate politics. I think I'm going to give it a rest for the day, maybe the week but I expect we'll all be back to butting heads in no time at all.

These are floating around Twitter from a Daily Beast article.

But, ya know, we should go easy on these poor criminals. We need criminal justice reform more than tax reform, right?

I don't think tax reform would fix "general douchebaggery" so it seems moot.

Of course it's "mental" to one degree or another -- you and I are political opposites yet there is ZERO chance either of us would try to kill one another for our politics.

Something snapped inside this man's brain. Ultimately that's the bottom line. Partisan politics was the EXCUSE for his actions, not the cause.

Wow, this guy was a real work:

Hodgkinson had a history of violence that did not rise to the level to prohibit him from legally owning a firearm.

In 2006, he was arrested for domestic battery and discharge of a firearm after he punched a woman “in the face with a closed fist,” according to a police report reviewed by The Daily Beast. When the woman's boyfriend walked outside of the residence, Hodgkinson allegedly aimed a shotgun at him and later fired one round.

Hodgkinson was also “observed throwing” an unnamed minor “around the bedroom,” the police report said. Police identified the girl as his daughter. After the girl broke free, Hodgkinson followed and “started hitting her arms, pulling her hair, and started grabbing her off the bed.”

When a woman tried escaping with Hodgkinson's daughter in a vehicle, Hodgkinson reached inside and “turned off the ignition,” the report said. “James then pulled out a possible pocket knife and cut [her] seatbelt.”

I condemn violence in all forms. Attempting to kill 1 person is wrong. Attempting to kill 24 million people by taking their health insurance is 24 million times as wrong.

Oh you mean he should have went after the Obamcare people who took a lot of peoples insurance away? I know poor people who had better insurance 5 years ago than they do now. I know some homeless who got insurance but had it all along. No one was turned away at the local hospitals and clinics who needed help here in the US. The cost was higher for the public but they weren't turned away. Now the deductible is more than a months salary and the Dr's are not taking new patients. You have to see a PA.

Again, I told you it's not conservatives you have to be worried about. It's not conservatives staging violent protests. It's not conservatives shooting members of Congress. It's not conservatives putting on a public play in New York City depicting the assassination of Barack Obama, and then being supported by some left-wing media Outlets. It's not conservative staging BLM protest and shooting cops. It's not conservatives burning down their fellow minority community members businesses in Ferguson. It's not conservatives writing in destroying property after the Presidential Inauguration in washington-dc.

So it's not conservatives you have to worry about unless you're one of the 24 million that's going to lose their health care... sarcasm
So why can't you look at this situation rationally and see all of the connecting lines that point too a deep sickness of the mentality on the left.

No sorry but we all watch the news, tv, and movies. Many belong to Facebook and other social media groups. We are all subject to portrayals of violence and many of us are also politically passionate. We're not all running around gunning down people who don't prescribe to our particular ideology.

Yeah. You sound like the right-wing version of that guy. Please don't murder anyone you insane person.

I think the poster is echoing the fear and frustration many of us with more conservative leanings feel. I've been feeling it all morning. I am afraid and angry. It's one thing to know that people like this guy wish me dead. It's quite another to know he's going to act on it, and I wonder how many more like him there are.

Now I do wish I had a gun.

If anyone doesn't thing that this Progressive, radical privilege shaming, punch a Nazi attitude kind of behavior being pushed by the media activist and politicians won't lead to something terrible. Especially after today's events.
Go and have a look at South Africa and the atrocities being committed in that Nation, and in the justifications used to get them to the point where they are today.

I will defend you for sure.

I have never once seen you call for any sort of violence. You are skeptical of Trump and post a lot of info based on that. I disagree with alot of what you post, but I have never even remotely got the vibe you were suggesting any vigilante or any other kind of violence.

Nor have you made light of this violence today (as others on here have).

I would say I had a similar distrust of Obama and Hillary than you did of Trump. Had a dem been shot, I would not want my feelings on Obama and Hillary, which I think are legitimate, to be blamed for that shooting.

Now, I think there is a discussion to be had about the hysterics that people, particularly in the main stream such as media, politics, and celebs, and have attempted to justify violence.

But people must be careful not to label anyone who dislikes trump as responsible for this act.

I'm surprised that he didn't go after Hillary and the DNC...

its also scary that there are many more racist crazy right wing radical people out there that want me dead. I have been scared like this not just all morning, but since Obama was president. It was scary to know how many are actually out there.

So it seems that although this may very well be politically motivated the guy was already a crazy son of a bitch and a mean bastard.

That's about it for my assessment.
