Instead of a basic income, how about a decent single payer health care system first?
I wouldn't mind my taxes going up 20% in order to get health care (of which I have none right now, and if a catastrophe where to happen, all of you would be on the hook, since well, everybody bitched when Bill wanted it, and now here we are...)
Can't afford it. $280 a month for a $5000 deductible? And no doctors visits or preventative care for the fee of having health care until I Pay that five grand out...

It's not about the D or R, it's about greed and about how health insurance is scrambling for the last bit of their pie before the house comes tumbling down.

I dont need heath care I need money. If I have money I can pay for health care.

Correct, but I fear the medical industry is going to drive this mother trucker into the ground.

They are grabbing all they can now.

Our system is #1 in cost by a long shot and #37 in health out comes. Our medical system is horrible.

Agreed, brother.
The scary thing is Bill and Hillary actually had a plan during his first term that most forget about that would have been the start of universal health care.
But Hillary.
Not to mention the millions of lobbyist dollars.
The blowback was so large, drug companies could advertise on tv barely listing side effects for drugs.
The insurance people were placated. But had to pretend they were taking a pinch during the ACA. Which we all know was a lie.
They are charging more for less and are getting government money for those who get NOTHING and have a deductible so large they can't get preventative care...

No hope now.
Next come the debtors prisons...

I think this is going to end with Joe and Jane six pack looking at their mortgage and their medical insurance bill and saying one has to go. It will be the thing they may need, not must need.
The wheel comes off the rim fast after the above event takes place.

Or you can pay for rent or bills...
Im not against the idea of a basic income for everyone.
But health care needs to be addressed at the same time. Basic access to services for anyone. Preventative care should be a big one. As well as mental health services, since most institutions closed down in the '70's ish and were corrupt leaving two generations of the mentally ill either on the streets or in prison. But that's because "they can't pull themselves up by the bootstraps"

It's happening now.
No one can afford a mortgage and health insurance.
One of the scary statistics is how many houses are empty and how no one can afford to buy them since the great bailout of '08. Yet more are being built.

Meanwhile, health insurance companies are saying "Excellent" while rolling their fingers together Mr. Burns style, raking in record profit while not really doing anything health related other than acting as a bookie for legal gambling with a persons value and access to medical care.

I'm scared, too.
Trump hasn't had to work for a paycheck to survive or had to worry about health insurance.
Ever.

I have a feeling he might get some blowback from the people on Medicare that voted for him.

I know many wont believe it for a second, and blame it on those damned liberals, but this is the future. Not because of welfare, food stamps, # social problems we must only fund our worldwide conquest mechanism, yada yada. The reason why is simply technology. Give it 2 - 3 decades and the amount of jobs that will be rendered absolutely obsolete will be astounding. A majority of the classic jobs still around will be for people developing even more tech freelance or with a company and for supporting the new electronic age in one form or another. Some of those obsolete jobs will certainly be jobs held by people complaining right here in this thread.

Once this comes to fruition, the only way the government will be able to continue functioning at all is with guarunteed taxations stemming from a universal basic income or something just like it.

Facts are facts. Denying it will not change it. Will this create even more lazy people? Sure probably. But so what? It is inevitable. And defining lazy by not working a #ty 9 to 5 job is invalid anyways. Some people just want to and should be able to live and experience in this day and age in a 'developed' country dammit.

ETA: I wanted to add, i can agree with the whole # Mark Zuckerburg sentiment. He is a total sellout, he stole the idea for Facebook, and he is only at the place he is now because his now present crappy platform happened to be at the right place at the right time. Ie the tech revolution for the average joe including things like the smartphone. Luck and timing alone caused his site to increase exponentially in popularity instead of somebody elses. Hell that guy more than likely is not even a competent programmer/developer solo. I dont support a lot of the crap he pushes and the dumbing down numbing of society Facefark has brought. The helping people connect and families stay in touch visually is great, other than that....ehhhhh.

That all being said, he makes a good point in this article. Think of all the additional great things we could already have in life if every creative person with a vision and side talent already had basic income and thus could pursue their idea full time not being bogged down with a crap job. It would be a lot.
their side vision, focus, and idea would now be their primary concern and could have full time work towards. Itd be their main thing not side thing and that would bring out alot of great developments the world over.

Would be nice to not have to worry about paying:

rent or a mortgage to live in a private decent looking and sized, solidly built house or condo.

Utilities to keep lights on, water running, keep heat or cool air inside.

Grocery store food needs.

Personal basic hygiene needs.

Travel needs within the state residing.

Basic clothing needs, shoes, socks, underwear, coats, gloves/mittens, pants, shirts.

Health care, vision and dental care.

This is what the poor stress over constantly. Everyone either wars over not having these basic needs met or they submit to some type of mental health illness being in constant crisis mode having to compete, beg, be someone's bitch, or be bullied or the bully just to obtain them. The constant battle for securing basic needs in my opinion is one of the top causes of suicide and drug and alcohol addiction as people are thinking in part "screw it all, let me forget. " I'm thinking this is also the reason why people have a hard time trusting other people, being in a relationship, and making genuine friends. The poor take out their anger on the other poor because only the poor will actually hear them and understand them, while at the same time then screw them over as soon as they can to achieve their own leg up in some way when they get the chance. The middle class doesn't understand the poor, nor the wealthy, but if they should, it's because they once were poor. Now as far as hearing them, they will, but only If you give up youself in some way to them and become a bed buddy, marry one or become a slave to one in someway. Step out of line and they will TRY to toss them out like trash. Usually not successful. This rancidness has increased since WW II. In my honest opinion this is why the middle class can't get along with each other. They've used and decieved each other for decades upon decades now. Then there's the wealthy where who knows what they really think about any of this as their level of mind is now so vastly different than those that fight over money just to keep the lights on in a house or get a car repaired and back on the road again.

This is just a sad situation for humans. I think this can be done without bloodshed by forming colonies on uninhabited fertile land with a system similar to a public library. Most libraries in the U.S. are superb and those that use them, including the homeless, are very respectful of the books and premisis. The new citizens can "check out housing and clothes and transportation." If they like it they can renew what they checked out for up to a year or something. With a basic income for grocery store food, personal needs and universal health, vision and dental care.

Membership would require being a student and learning. That's what we are here for. To learn and experience and enjoy each other.

For those that feel the need to keep the thrill of living in a dog eat dog world alive for their experience, thriving in knowing someone may back stab them, or they will be the stabbers, take their house, force them to eat food from The Dollar Tree, go for days without lights or heat in their house because they couldn't pay an outrageous utility bill, have to travel by foot or bike with kids in tow with reckless, distracted drivers zooming past them or go no where and stay home for months on end hoping their luck will turn again in their favor, knowing hundreds of thousands of people spend what precious little money is left circulating, because too many hoard it and don't and won't spend it, in casinos, gambling it all away.

The system today is a big SNOW JOB. Not many like it but nevertheless still cling to it riding it's coat tail to lick up the crumbs in somekind of robot mode or daze. Most want something NEW but not communist. A basic income on SAFE TERRITORY with people there on their own free will, ran sort of like a system in a library without being communist would be interesting.

Would be interesting to have a society that has 3 rotating social classes, for lack of a better word., that the people of the country get to, and MUST, experience. Say 2 yrs living in a nice and comfortable off grid setting. Hands on farming, barn raising, log cabins, stone fireplace, wood stoves, solar panels, fishery and wild game and vegetation and healing type of living. Focus is on natural healing and community. Then 2 years urban or suburban setting. Integrating the old and the new with a focus on learning technology and energetic healing. Then 2 years of wealthy living either in a urban, suburban or rural setting with all the most modern and high tech widgets. This setting has a focus on creative writing and art and expressing spirituality tbrough it. Then rotate back again as part of the deal. The key is to make every living setting and it's surrounding community, desirable to such a degree, everyone looks forward to movimg and doesn't despair when their 2 yrs comes to live off grid again because it's fun, beautiful and exciting.

I would welcome a BUI...
But i dont see that coming anytime soon....

Although, id like to see 3 things sooner then yesterday....
1: Free Education. From start to end.
2: Free Healthcare
3: Free Dentalcare

Imho, those 3 are basic human rights, and in fact VITAL
for any nation. We have in Sweden, 1.5 of the 3.
Education is free up to College.
We have groundschool, from age 6-15, then college
15-19/20 depending on the education. After that
you pay...
Healtcare is somewhat free, you need to see a doctor.
Paying for that.
Then you need treatment, some you pay for some you dont.
So .5
Dentalcare is the most needing care. No teeth, no food....
and we have to pay for all of that...

You wanna know how to get rid of terrorism, fanatic religion
and stuff? Get rid of need...
And to do that, you give..
For starters....

For once I agree with him.

In a business point of view, this creates more money in circulation, more people having basic necessities met, more entrepreneurs creating businesses and working on ideas to make our life better. Less crime as people won't have to steal, cheat, or scam just to make ends meet.

Considering this, and the future of having automation replacing most of the human workforce, I believe it is a must to switch to such a system and evolve as human beings. The sooner the better.

I am so against the "mincome" idea myself, but as always I try to see the other side of the argument. You touched on exactly what I thought, people in certain jobs will be rendered obsolete to technology.

Though, we have a looooooong way until then...

I have been stressing to the younger generations in my family to learn coding. But, that may even change by the time they come of age.

Then again... this is a conspiracy site... hopefully we don't get knocked back into the stone age by an EMP et al.

Also, with people not working... expect crime to sky rocket!!!

Yeah, after it was found that universal health coverage was a bad idea for California, pushed by people who have no concept of actually paying for something, the next move is to cut out services altogether and just move to free money.

If you are talking about a world where all jobs are done by robots and computers and there is no need for human resource, then sure, share out the wealth and let's live our lives free of the burden and evils of money... sounds perfect. I suspect we're a bit of a way from that though. In the meantime, who's going to pay for the free money handouts?

The UK government already does this. There are number of ways to qualify such as, having children that you do not have the means to raise, or openly calling for the deaths of the infidel/soldiers/police etc.

Correct about the having babies statement, but calling for the death of soldiers etc is not a qualifying condition for welfare benefits.
Your claim is false and reeks of bigotry.

Well, the government should take all the money from Zuckerberg and the Silicon Valley elites and give it to everyone, taking all future income also. That would be a start to the process. Taking all of technologies money and spreading it amongst the people would be good. Stock holders do not need that money, neither do the execs of those corporations, they can live on a small amount of money just like everyone else. We are all equal, the only ones who deserve more money are those who actually physically abuse their body above the average to do their job.

Do you really think this can happen in the US?

There is a wind of taking like we have not seen before the great depression. Pay has been stagnant for 40 years-the 1% is grabbing more and more.

Feeling the influence the corps have in the US and around the world, I can't see this happening. There are people making high (very expensive) end clothing in dank terrible conditions for peanuts. The company that is getting the contract work insulates the big corp from any blame when the truth comes out. By design.

In my opinion, the only way there is going to be anything given is if it is taken.
