Why does ATS Require a Verified Social Network Account for Signing Up?

There is only way to sign up, and it is with a social network account.

Grandfather clauses are a common thing. That's normal for most things. That said, had it been like that when I joined, I probably never would have.

I am feeling a bit let down...there was no announcement to the changes.
When i joined, i had read so much here about social media...being a conspiracy.

Let me see if I understand what you're saying. If I commit a crime, and the FBI sees on my computer that I use ATS, the FBI can call ATS to access my Google G-mail without having to beg Google for it?

I don't see how it can be any clearer. They want an account for which you have to identify yourself.

If you break the law they can get to you no matter what, the point is that this requirement discourages people from speaking their minds, or signing up in the first place.....

the whole "join by e-mail" part is in the source of that page, but it's commented out.

It is recent as of today, I tried to sign up yesterday and the day before and the "join" server was down, for at least two days.

maybe they're having issues with sending confirmation e-mails then, that could explain why they've blocked out sign up by e-mail.

my guess is it's temporary. we'll have to wait for SO to clarify.
