What makes this tragic, as opposed to routine, is that he did not live long enough to realize the destructiveness of his beliefs. The irony is that his death was probably at the hands of one of his "brothers." This might be a power play inside the terrorist organization, or some sort of personal romantic feud.

You do not understand Karma. Just because a man lives on a big ranch does not mean he has no pain in his life. Dick Cheney literally has no heart. George W Bush has lived to hear himself as the comparative for "worst President ever." Bill Clinton has to live with a jilted woman who had a presidential election stolen from her. Would you invite these situations into your life?

It has been used in that way for political purposes. As a concept is is much deeper than that, though. Karma simply means action, and for every action there is a reaction. It is not necessarily moral, nor do its workings necessarily conform to what the limited human mind considers "just."
