Has anyone else noticed the number of new drugs advertised on TV directed at the aging Baby Boomer population? I know they consume more pharmaceuticals, but I also know there is a growing anti-Boomer sentiment among Gen-Xers and younger....Makes me wonder just what really is in some of these new medicines.

Please recall that just a few short weeks ago we considered Obama's extensive use of executive orders and federal agency regulations to be unconstitutional and unwanted overreach of executive power. So, Trump using the same methods is not?

This may have been mentioned before in this thread, and I missed it.

I have heard (and it makes sense to me) that one of the big reasons for these ads is to educate the public about all the possible bad consequences and side-effects of these drugs.

The reason that half of each advertisement is devoted to talking about all the possible side effects and issues with a particular drug -- is the main reason for the advertisement! This serves to help inoculate the company from the inevitable lawsuits against them.

As I say -- it makes sense to me. These companies couldn't very well start off with discussion all the horrible consequences of their medicine. So they first up talk their product it for the first half of the ad, then deliver the true point of the ad -- that their medicine can be quite dangerous: "you were warned so don't think about suing us!"

Just a thought.

Actually they are spending closer to $6 Billion a year...

What gets me is the side effect disclosures generally consume more air time than the benefit(s)/purpose of the drug, shouldn't that be telling us something?

Naturally the Pharma companies all claim they must charge the high prices to recoup their R&D costs, that's actually believable, there are millions of dollars spent on R&D for things that simply don't work out, but, I bet an audit would prove if they (as an industry) reduced their marketing budget by 10% they'd recoup nearly all of those expenditures in failed R&D without gouging humanity.

The above will never happen because there are way too many hands in the cookie jar, I'm looking toward Madison Avenue, Wall Street, and Harvard Law School et-al as I type this.

Good thread Lenert29.

Edit to add: Let's not overlook the $50 Million+ spent by the Pharma companies on lobbying the US Legislature (Both houses of Congress). That's $50 MILLION and it only accounts for lobbying in the United States.

FWIW- I've been to DC many times to lobby Congress myself on behalf of independent (read small like ATS) publishers and media outlets and I can tell you that the Pharmaceutical guys get all the meetings with the elected officials they want. Us little guys were usually handed off to a Legislative Assistant or, if we were lucky, a policy wonk working for the Senator or Representative, rarely did we ever get face time with actual Senator or Congressperson.

The entire plant?
Opium is the raw material used in the manufacture of Heroin, Heroin does not come from the plant in Heroin form.

The major legal Opium growing countries in the world are India, Turkey, and Australia in the state of Tasmania. The countries that grow the most illegal Opium are Pakistan, Burma, Thailand, and Afghanistan, which is also the world’s top supplier of Opium. Opium can also be grown in places like Mexico and Columbia.

This right here is a big deal.

These companies are raking in billions a year. Peddling, in some case, drugs with horrible side effects.

I was watching one of these commercials and in the list of side effects. They claimed, this product may make you start gambling.

I don't know what sort of ingredients are in the pill. However something making you gamble is a big deal.

How did that even pass FDA testing?

lol i saw one that warned of an exploding spleen once. these things are getting out of hand and should be shut down. patients should not be choosing their medicine. next step is to get these guys out of the doctors office with their kickbacks for prescribing certain drugs.

its interesting how the opium production went up 400% in afghanistan within the first year of US troops being there. ive talked to soldiers who have mentioned how they not only protected the opium fields but they were escorting and protecting chinese workers whos companies owned the fields. some shenanigans going on over there. wouldnt surprise me if we saw an increase in black budget funding for the cia during the same time period

This man is nothing short of a hero in my book. This speech is long overdue. Shoving all of the REAL studies that show risks aside is dishonest. It has cost me and many people I know a lot of years of hardship with health problems. I got Type 1 Diabetes at 2 years old, 2 weeks after getting the MMR vaccine. Many other children in my hometown (small town) were coming down with Type 1 Diabetes shortly after the vaccination rounds as well. Diabetes of both types (young autoimmune type, and older diabetes) cost America 3000 million (300 billion) each year! They had better quit giving us things like diabetes, lupus, autism, etc., etc.!!! America actually would be the most powerful country in the world, if it wasn't 40th in health in the world - because of all of the vaccine damage caused! I want them to make the vaccines completely optional for adults and THEIR children! I want to see all of these autoimmune disorders cured. Trump will do it. He promised, and he seems to be a man of keeping his promises. Thank goodness for a leader that will finally do what's right - instead of accepting 7 figures for the bank from the next big pharma drug salesman!!!

Just a quick OT question:

How were you able to start a thread in the education & media forum with your first post?

Did ATS change the rules regarding new members and posting?

Not complaining about you OP, but this seems weird...

Speaking with former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura on an episode of “Off The Grid“, Kennedy revealed that 70% of ad revenue for major news networks comes from big pharma.

Who's Kennedy?

And I agree it would a terrible blow to the pharma industry if Trump were to sign an EO barring pharma companies from doing direct advertising on TV.

Has he or anyone in his cabinet talked about doing this?

On the flip side of this, big pharma has a *lot* of congressman and senators in their pocket. I would expect some serious pushback to something like this. They can't stop Trump from signing an EO, but they can vociferously bitch behind the scenes prior to Trump signing this EO and letting him know he won't see much support from them on any bills put forth that furthers Trump's agenda.

In that case, Trump will need the GOP to vote as a block in order to get stuff done. The problem is, many of those congressman and senators mentioned above are in the GOP...

Pretty much says it all except things have been out of hand for a long time. Being a drug rep is the one of the most overpaid, overrated jobs ever. And they do what? Of course educate! A good set of tits does wonders in promoting drug sales. Check out a few drug reps and tell me I'm wrong.

Ask me what I really think of the industry. I know one former drug employee who blew the whistle and she now has an eight figure bank account as a result. No kidding, not making it up. She is a one of my sons lady friends whom he sees on a regular basis.
