Looks like Trump's patience with China is up.

That sounds ominious.

I was thinking that as well. Between what happened to Otto Warmbier, the rest of our citizens in NK prisons, and their nukes/chemical/biological weapons, there is no reason why military action shouldn't be taken.

Lil' Kim doesn't respond to diplomacy.

Lil' Kim doesn't respond to sanctions.

Lil' Kim wants his own way no matter what it costs, even if lives are at stake.

Lil' Kim has threatened us with nukes, and can reach Alaska and Hawaii.

Never mind his satellites, which supposedly have EMP capabilities.

He's sworn to attack us. He's evil enough to whack who knows how many people, inc. members of his own family. I question whether his wife and daughter are safe there.

I don't want to see innocent people die, but imho if we go for "strategic patience" once again, that will give Lil' Kim more time to take military action against us, which, imo, would cost more lives than the other way around.

The time to act is now.

N. Korea conducts rocket engine test in suspected ICBM development

Nothing earth shattering, but another rocket engine test today.

My brother and I have had an ongoing discussion the past few months regarding these rocket tests. He thinks we should try to shoot one down to give Lil Kim a slap on the wrist. Once it is out over international waters it's not entirely fair game, but I don't think shooting it down would provoke any serious retaliation. I'm against it for another reason though.
We had another failure of the missile defense system today.

The big problem I see with trying to shoot one of their rockets down is, if the system fails, that would be a tremendous propaganda victory for North Korea. It would probably embolden them even more. If we were to do it, if possible I'd program the system to launch several interceptors. If the success rate is only 40% or so, on the face of it launching 3 interceptors might sound like it would ensure success, but it wouldn't necessarily. I just think it would be way too risky.

Yes, I'm actually surprised that they release any information regarding failed intercept tests. I'm sure they could spin or alter the test goals at least publicly. They would have to release something I'd assume, but if it were me (and what do I know) I wouldn't publicize anything that wasn't positive. Give the media something to chew on, as you're not going to hide the tests. Just control the narrative. They do it for other things. Not saying it's "right", so to speak. But call me guilty, because I'd do it. I've always thought and have probably stated as such on ATS that I assumed any announced missile defense test lately would result in a positive result. Not the first time I was wrong, oh well.

Haven't put a lot of thought into it but off the cuff I only see a few benefits of being straight on the matter. One is just being honest and transparent. The other two are kind of co-mingled. All the talk about NK developing nuclear weapons further, along with missile technology sparks fear in many people. News of failed interceptor tests increase that fear for some. This could conceivably increase support for military action against NK. It could also build support for more funding of interceptor tech. Not saying it's anything more than what it is, just a straight report. But all news affects public opinion one way or the other.

As for shooting down one of NK's tests where they actually launch, I tend to agree with you. Epic fail if it doesn't work. I've always thought it was too risky to attempt unless their launch was an actual attack. It would weaken our deterrent ability incredibly if we didn't hit. A launch against one of their tests would also ratchet tensions up greatly as well for what it's worth.

Well one reason you make stuff like that publicly available is so that everyone knows we need more funding to get it right. I know the public thinks the government keeps all kinds of crazy stuff secret, and I'm not saying they don't, but it's not always in the government's best interest to keep certain things secret.

It's too bad we didn't remotely manipulate the software and cause the engine to explode in the middle of test.

NK fires ballistic missile into sea

"North Korea fired an unidentified ballistic missile into the East Sea from the vicinity of Banghyon, North Pyongan Province, at around 9:40 a.m.," the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said.

Kim Jong-Un would like to remain relevant.

It is all N. K. has left to get what they need so they dont implode. As long as he is a threat to S.K., Japan and the US his mindset is we will do anything to prevent going to war. It was the failed policies under Clinton, Bush and Obama that got us to this point..

lil kimmy seems to think Trump will be the same. That will be his undoing.

Already done... They announced the type of missile and that it was a success, traveling for 39 minutes over so many miles.

They said it was a Hwasong-14 which reached an altitude of 2,800km and hit target after 39 minutes flight.

Experts estimate it's maximum range is 8,000-10,000km

Photos show they have a minimum of 5 more of these.
