The one thing I'd like to say, I doubt anyone has said this before, everyone just seems to be yappin' about "What if the US invaded Europe....", yeah, WAKE UP MC FLY, not anytime soon! The thing you Americans have to realise, (Not trying to be racist here!) is we Europeans are not like YOU! We don't go around the world, bragging about how powerful our armies, and how we are a superpower and can change the world and all this sort of crap! One thing you have to realise is, contrary to what you believe, we're not a bunch of war-loving nuts who challenge other 3rd World nations, in a effort to supposedly "democratize" them, which is by far stupid! We respect other nations and cultures, we like our peace, and we spend BILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year thinking up ingenious ways on how to kill people!!!

Get it in your head, war is NOT cool! Even as we speak, U.S. forces are in another country, trying to get rid of "weapons of mass destruction" that pose a very REAL threat and must be taken care of! Yeah right, the Iraqi War of 2003 has to be one of the most uncalled for, unjustfied war in years!!! And the war on terror, another excellent way to waste money, and gain other countrie's land and resources, let's see, what progress have the great American's made, NONE!

Let's examine the situation here:

-Have you guys caught the supposed "king of terror" Osama Bin Laden=NO!

-Have come close to stopping Al-Qaeda and closing down their terrorist cells=NO

-Have you stabilised the very hostile situation in Iraq=NO

-Have you managed to install a successful interim government in Afghanistan that the country's citizens have ACTUALLY APPROVED OF=NO

-Have contributed positively at ALL, in past 5 years to the world in way=NO

Why do Americans feel like your the World Police? Why is it you feel you must democratize every single nation on the EARTH before your satisfied that there is no evil government in any nation in the world? Why do you keep trying to disarm other countries of the world, when your defence spending yearly is a world record, and you possess the world's largest nuclear, 2nd largest chemical and biological stockpile of weapons in the world? Why must you get involved in other countrie's business, and then completely cripple them when you decide to take action and invade them? Why are you targeting all these 3rd World, Middle-Eastern nations, as the "homeland of terror", if anything America's Military is one of the most terrifying in the world, and if you think your country doesn't have problems, TAKE A DAMN LOOK:

-Highest rate of death by firearms every year=America

-Highest Defence budget spending in the world=America

-Only country to be involved in all the major conflicts of the past 20 years apart from Britain, UN, and NATO=America

-The leader of the war on terror, that has made no progress in stopping terrorism at all, seems more like to turned into a crusade against foreign nations=America

-Largest Nuclear weapons stockpile of around 10,000=America

-One of the world's most unapproved presidents in modern history, that has been elected for a 2nd term, and has an average approval rating of 38% in opinion polls by its OWN people=America

-Is America the land of the free, when powerful corporations can silence dissidents like Michael Moore, a citizen=No

-Is America the land of plenty, when one household in thirteen lives in a trailer=NO

-Does the US have the best way of life, when in a BBC poll, 96 per cent of foreginers interviewed in Germany, England, Australia and from Russia out of almost 10,000 say that they wouldn't want to live in America=NO (In the same poll, 1 Australian in 100 says she wouldn't prefer to live in America.)

-Is America the safest country in the world when it has some of the world's most ridiculous gun laws resulting in the death of almost 12,000 citizens every year, just because it's part of a constitution written back when America had no defence force=NO

-Is America truly the beacon of justice, when it tortures prisoners of war in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay=NO

-Is America truly the cradle of democracy, when its president is elected by a minority=NO

-Is America one of the world's least polluting and fossil emission producing nations=NO

-Is America one of the smartest nations in the world, when the general populous have an average IQ of 82=NO

-Is America a clean, crime-free, peaceful nation, when Drug-Trafficking into the United States is making a profit of around $120 billion dollars, and when overall Drug Use in America is estimated to be around 29%, and when violent crimes in the U.S. like murder, attempted murder, grevious bodily harm and man slaughter are second only to some nations in South America and Africa=AND NOPE

A RESOUNDING NO AND AMERICA! The signs of a sick, sad nation.

Behind it all, you can find a powerful blend of ignorance, hypocrisy, and obedience. It’s a kind of disease, something I call the ‘IHO Syndrome’: I for ignorance, H for hypocrisy, O for Obedience. Under its influence, lies become truth, wrong becomes right. Peace becomes war, justice becomes torture.

I'm not saying every American is bad, but your country is FAR from perfect!

So please, before you go around saying U-S-A! U-S-A! and blabbing on about how powerful you are, take a good long look at your own nation and what it's doing to the world and itself! Face it, America is slipping, other nations are going to become more powerful than, nobody lasts, so don't be so thick-headed and deny that America isn't a Superpower, sure it maybe NOW, but resentment towards the US is growing, I'd would be VERY careful if I were George Bush, but of course I'm not. Americans are jealous because they won't be able to control the world and influence it like they always have, because other nations are becoming more powerful!

Please realise, it is not about who's got this and whose got that, and which country has a got a bigger army and blah blah blah blah.... you Americans are forcing all of these bad things on yourselves, that why your society is SO corrupt, it's CORRUPTED FROM WITHIN! Your lifestyle is practically controlled by the government and other power corporations and people without you knowing it!

The Internet or it's successor is the future of entertainment and I'm sick of stupid low IQ, ignorant Americans infecting every corner of it with their insular, jingoistic mindsets, their whiny voices and manifestations of their low self esteem driven by the fact that despite it being their turn as the world's super power, no one actually takes them seriously or gives them the respect that the British or the Ancient Greeks got because a superpower best known for producing mass produced crap is never going to get the respect that one who gave the world Shakespeare, culture, philosophy or mathematics will get.

I'm sick of hypocrisy and two facedness. I'm sick of Gangsta Rap and hamburgers, Political Correctness and TV programmes that begin with 'When' and end in 'go bad and attack people'. I'm sick of reality TV and I'm sick of news programmes that are more censored than accurate. I'm sick of tokens, token minorities, token universities, token degrees, token attempts at the truth, tokens. I'm sick of fat people, ugly people, stupid people, gay people, coloured people, female people, whiny people all complaining they don't have the opportunities in life they would like and it must be someone else's fault. I'm sick of women that act like men and femininity being a crime, unless you're a man in which case you're a new man which nobody ever wanted because there was nothing wrong with the old one. I think the following things will happen in regards to the world power balance. Europe will stay about the same powerwise with the EU perhaps giving them more strength than before but individually they won't increase in power, probably even decrease. Brazil will gain more power and influence because of their reasonably large population and the fact that their country has many resources. Japan will stay about the same or maybe decline a little. China will increase it's power and may overtake the US in total GDP. India will also be on the rise but i don't think they are likely to overtake China or the US because their country doesn't have the geographical size or resources that China and the US have. Russia will also be powerful again but because of the loss of the soviet states and the smaller population and geographic size as a result of it they won't be as much of a power as they were in the past. This is what it looks like now in terms of GDP, population and geographic size.

I don't think you can use Europe and powerful in the same sentence these days. As an American, I see Europe as the bad roomate who sleeps on the couch all day, refusing to get a job. Not only do they not clean up after themselves, they smell bad and haven't done the dishes in weeks.

Of course we feel like we have to be the world police. It has become clear that Europens are too gutless to deal with the real problems in the world. We can't expect a bunch of former world powers to play mommy with the idots in the middle east.

Last time I checked we thats right the people of europe went into korea with the US (mabye not as much as the US but the fact remains our service men died fighting with yours) Also last time I checked the UK has went with the US into nearly every fight its been in, dont call us gutless! I may not have the guts to go and fight but I sure as hell wont see you curse our service men or any other service men who die in war.

We can't expect a bunch of former world powers to play mommy with the idots in the middle east.

I more likely would say US is the one who is unemploy and suffering from mental problems and start to wreckage the place and pointing finger at others. Same time Europe is out on work and enjoying life.

This topic is interresting but i red first pages only. I'd like to share my european citizen point of view about our military power, excluding any political parameters.

First, we must remember that Europe has a long history and his "social roots" come from Roman Empire, annexing tribes and realms around them with a genuis and simple method called Pax Romana (roman peace), this was about to say to "savages" : "Be free but under roman senate control and protection or die". This concept was backed up by roman legions, most powerful and developped army corps of Antiquity.

This concept of war lasted all around in Europe till beginning of WWII. Charlemagne (one of the firsts French kings) and Napoleon de Bonaparte used this "pax romana" method to conquer most part of Europe, from Spain to Russia, but Hitler's Blitzkrieg and systematic destruction put an end to the choice of peace, proposed formerly to invaded nations.

The most important part of European warfare is diplomacy. During centuries and centuries, our countries used negotiation to get what they wanted (for example, the Pope decided to give South America to Spain and Asia to Portugal). Of course, diplomacy was a way to excuse violence, wars, genocides, robbery, rape et c, but after WW2, we kept using this. The most revealing example is the end of our colonial empire, an useless and hughe bloodbath becaused of "white governments pride".

Well, all this to explain that today, French, German and European Union strategy is based on DIPLOMACY. I don"t say it's a good way, i don't give any opinion, but it's a fact. About our military power, of course we are weak compared to US forces and intelligence services, but there are things making the difference (at least about France) :

- French army has a long and hard experience (Algeria, Indochina, black Africa colonies, Napoleonian wars, WW1 and WW2, Liban, Ivory Coast -not sure of translation- Balkans conflicts, American independance war with La Fayette's troops et c).

- French Republic has olds and strongs links with several countries all over the world, born of centuries of trading, sharing, wars then peace treaty, colonisation et c.

- French secret services use "sleeping browsing" instead of US method : to pick up actively information. Thoses two ways are good, but the French one has an advantage on the US one. People who give information come generally as volunteers, because France is "loved", not feared.

- French Air Force and Navy are weak, but Army has a wonderful "Joker", it's Colonial Troops (Marine Infantry, Marine Paratroopers, and most of all Foreign Legion). These troops are trainned to shoot, but more than anything, they're trainned to be loved by people. This is why civilian people wants to help them, even more than they help other soldiers and secret service.

Well... i hope i was clear, i don't say my army is the best or US are lamers, not at all, i just show you that, where US forces need 10 divisions to keep a country safe, French forces need only 10 companies.

Well I have to comment on one specific thing here, when Europe is used as a generality, the UK shouldn't be used or thought of in the same light. The Brits are willing to fight and not babble with hopeless diplomacy. They have learned the Chamberlain lesson well...I appreciate the help we have received from them and it is and will be remembered, but the others well.........I guess you know the answer to the "old" Europe. New free nations such as Poland are willing to do the right thing and take a risk...

France had the reign of terror where every person having to do with the previous government was executed
During WW2 Polish military men escaping from Germans and Russians formed POlish Brigades in the British Army. It was soon realized over 5,000 POlish Officers and SOldiers were missing. Later it was found that the Russians had executed all of them.
The british also went on a world conquering escapade except this was for several hundred years. IM sure the native peoples wanted trhem there.

You could name them forever. Point being lots of these posts seem like The US war on terror, (which i think had justification in 9/11, but got out of hand), is the worst thing ever.

Because of diplomacy and working together against an enemy although not loseing men and women in the field against this enemy.
Look at what happened after WW2, the whole of europe (or the free part) was up in arms together and supporting each other , with american help , which is another thing since most of europe liked america then and we both got along fine.
