I'd advise to NZ peeps to doublecheck their earthquake kit just in case... There was a big stranding before the ChCh quake too!

A big earthquake showed up on the Yellowstone webicorders. I'm not sure if it's the 6.5M, or if it's the 5+M up in Canada. Yeah, Canada.

While I'm here, I noticed a bit of activity earlier in the week around NMSZ. I'm not saying much other than to note it.

Coming after 23 September 2017.... in the region of Erta Ale a Volcanic region in Ethiopia

a region which also is in the process of Shifting/Splitting-up of African & Arabian tectonic plates....

the region, soon after September 2017, will see a sudden eruption and Sea Floor spreading of the Red Sea itself along the northern and southern coastlines of Africa & Saudi Arabia...

of particular interest will be the distress and formidable destruction to the iconic and secluded-to-the-public and inland city of Mecca (in close proximity to Jiddah)... but the EQ/Volcano/plate shifting/ will encompass Eritrea, Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia on the south shore of Red Sea & principally the series of volcano mountains in Arabia to the north of Red Sea

MANILA, Philippines - (UPDATE 2, 12:30 P.M.) At least four people died and more than 80 others were wounded, 13 seriously, when a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck Surigao City late Friday, shutting down the airport and knocking power in two towns, the provincial governor said.

Gov. Sol Matugas said engineering teams were scrambling to fix alternative routes as three bridges were also damaged, and worried that the province had been cut off by the damage to the airport runway, which forced its closure to commercial planes.

Damn I just updated the Culverden-Cook page just a few hours ago before this happened!
1357 felt reports, based on those the energy was released to the south
I'm not even going to mention it on the 400 whales stranding topic, there were no stranding before the 7.8 in Nov 2016, so there can be no connection now.

I just added the extra few quakes with the 5.17 to the KML file, so it will show on the 2nd 10,000 map.
Its at the SW end of the main aftershock series, closest to the Mt Culverden Fault.
Hopefully this doesn't mean its going to break to the SW now?
so far since the 5.2 just a 2.53 4.8km to the SSE and a 2.42 3.34km to the S

That makes it 55 x Mag5 aftershocks of the 7.8, is 90 days (3 months) elapsed time today

I'm thinking this is a "classic" earthquake swarm,
3 x 5.3's and a 5.1 the biggest quakes.
there are no indications a bigger one will be the end result (but hey, you never know)
I will write a page on it soon, with the timeline graph, interactive map etc

I am so happy that dam didn't burst in California. However, it again shows the negligence of civil engineers. They knew there was a design flaw. Dams are delicate things. One mistake and the whole thing goes.

This weekend, I was irritating my children. They were watching the movie Slap Shot. I stopped the movie to fill them in on the history. The movie was filmed in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The director changed the name to Charlestown. It is a old steel town that was nearly wiped off the face of the earth by a flood. They even reference the flood in the film. Rich Steel Tycoons had a fishing and hunting lodge on an artificial lake. The rest is a horror story. I'll save you my bit and give you a link.



(edit... I just found out there was another major flood in Johnstown one year after filming in 1977... wow- this town suffered.)



So, when I heard a dam was near failing, I knew it was no joke, and it could fail. It hasn't. But they knew there was danger and have ignored it.

And now for earthquakes in California and the reservoirs . All this water. Water lubricates faults. However, there is also water's mass. That mass is heavy and sits on faults. I don't need to tell you guys the rest. We've provided many examples here over the years. But here 's one to refresh our memories.

Its not the Engineers fault, it is the Californian politicians or the tax payers fault for not finding the funds to fix the dam spillway, the Engineers gave the heads up a decade ago and nothing was done to fix it.

Yes the water behind Dams does cause earthquakes, Aswan in Egypt is a classic example. Even today decades after it was built and filled there are earthquakes every day around the reservoir

You're right and wrong. Because the engineers are heads of the departments and their signatures are on the drafts. The politicians are horrible people that pressure them. The engineers could revolt, but they don't. They like their jobs. So, they are part of the problem. New Orleans, the same thing, except it's the Army Engineers. They knew it would fail. In California, the engineers knew the danger, and still signed on the dotted line. They took the responsibility.

Also, I agree with rebound and you and I agree there may be a link with weather patterns (I'm being general because they are complex and subtle). So, water and weather are important factors. I didn't know they literally damned the Nile. It's just a big sand dune holding back a mighty force. I imagine the constant earthquakes are because it is also very sandy under the dam and the river. Forget the rifting beside the region. I should say that the ground under the dam is sandy, and, is silt and clay. The Nile wandering back and forth over time would make the area loosely constructed.

Hard to believe it has been 30 days since the big mag 5 swarm surge at Montreale, (Norcia Series)
its been popping fast, already near another 10,000 aftershocks since then.

as you can see the quakes since the 4 x 5s of 18/01 haven't been restricted to that southern area, but have carried on right across the whole series aftershock area


second screenshot shows the latest 11x M3's along with all the M5's and the two M6's (Accumoli and Norcia) Biggest were 2 x M3.7's, one of them in the north (top two on the map 3.6 nd 3.7) and the other in the west (left two 3.7 and 3.5)

Keeping in mind what a fellow ATS-er mentioned here awhile back...about water = EQ Lubrication....and also about that theory of low-pressured storms/stormfronts also linking to EQ probability... Here's what the forecast is for CA in the next couple of days. Lots of rain (lubrication) and low pressured storms (lubrication).
