My thoughts exactly.

I completely get why people are disgusted by this. I am disgusted by this. It is abhorrent behavior.

Yet it is still free speech.

Say I have a daughter that likes to play monkey and asks a little black girl if she is a money, is that a violation of civil rights?

lol, no, she is a child.

But if someone who knows better dresses up as a monkey and dangles bananas...then it is discrimination and not only an idiot move, but illegal

Being offended isn't cause to remove civil liberties.

Do you think it is OK to remove liberties because of a costume and fruit, and hyper sensitive amped up demonstrators?

Not it is not. Otherwise the Klan and Neo-Nazi groups would not be able to have people stand on a street corner and preach against Jews, blacks and anyone else they despise.

Look, i can't argue with idiots that don't understand what civil rights are, or doesn't know the difference btw what a child understands and what an adult understands, its draining.

If you don't understand by now, then you will never ever ever understand.

You couldn't be more wrong.

Protection of all speech is important. If you pick and choose then we all loose. (didn't mean the rhyme)

But what about infringement of civil rights, that is important too.

You don't have a civil right not to be insulted. Bottom line this was an expression of free speech. Not sure exactly what point he was trying to make or the links he made in his head. But that's irrelevant freedom of speech protects people and allows them today say what ever they believe to be true. Yes people can say racist things yes they have that right and trying to prosecute people for going so seems like a good idea. Problem is who decides what's racist look how crazy people are with cheese pizza mean in ng your a pedophile not sure I want to trust others judging anything.

The only thing that should have got him in trouble would be if he threatened violence that is illegal.

So it's your interpretation it's racist? Is it illegal to dress up as a gorilla with a banana and a noose?

Used to see effigies of referees with a noose at games, is that a violation of civil rights?

Oh, it's abhorrent behaviour, and probably does deserve at least a punch in the nose, maybe even two.

Civil rights charges, though?

I don't like they guy in the gorilla suit.

But free speech was never meant about being nice.

It was about living in a society not oppressed in expressing itself. Part of being in that society is being civil and understanding free speech.

I am glad people are free to express themselves and can be easily identified as idiots.

But that doesn't give people the right to react violently. They can freely call the guy an idiot and racist.

The day our societies actions are determined by violent mobs, or out of fear from any violent group, is the day rule of law is lost.

It depends. You can March with swastiKas. But if you pulled a Nazi reproduction oven down the road as float in a parade it would invoke fighting words type of doctrines. It starts to become a direct threat with the sole purpose of inciting anger not expressing ideas.

It also has line between being a threat or purposely trying to incite violence.

You can't say I am going to kill your kids and burn a picture of them and call it free speech.
