No, you are right that a set of facts have been used by two factions to tell the story they want to tell.
Neither can be proven to be correct, so we speculate and argue why the facts are more likely to suit our point of view.
In politics that is pretty much the norm.

Look at Trump stand his ground. The word "presidential" comes to mind, while Hillary is made of so much sugar she couldn't handle a little rain.

There was no gun, they guy was a republican opposing Trump, his own words were that he was trying to "contrast President Barack Obama’s reaction to a protester during a rally a few days ago, in which he urged the crowd to respect the protester, with Trump's, saying he wanted “people to understand” the difference." Instead he proved that even within his own party, Trump's supporters cannot control themselves. And Trump himself acted like a great big p**sy. He even ducked deeper beside the service man to make sure that guy took the hit and not him. Watch it again.
