I wasn't aware that pointing out that the nature of the thing taking place in the streets changed from protest to riot was generalizing a group of people.

I did not say they were all rioters or all protesters. I said after the action becomes a riot, it looks bad for any protesters who remain the same way it looks bad for a kid to hang out with a group of known addicts even if the kid in question never uses.

its one thing to get into a physical altercation with one person, its another if youre being approached by multiple people....

Honestly it goes from physical injury to possibility of death......and you have a right to protect your life...

If youve got more than one guy beating on you its not a back massage, yes by all means stop the threat.......

I cant help but think that people who dont get this are prime targets for people like the ones who beat that man in the video......

So assume multiple people descend on you with a chance to want to assault you. How many people to one does it have to be to justify using a firearm? I'm curious. I've been confronted 2:1, 5:1, and up to 15:1 including being followed at times.

But if everyone starts shooting, then well, you're better off to shoot first, and see there's the problem with carrying, particularly if emotions are running high. Furthermore, having the gun on you means that you cannot lose it, so you'll have to use it and shoot them all down.

I think you're wrong, ultimately, and the problem is too many guns.

Some day though someone will start shooting, and that'll be bad.

Imagine if you will, someone who's filled with rage and violence in their heart who goes out hoping TO get singled out and beat on, just to have an excuse to shoot down some racists blacks.

All that said, what that pack of losers did to that man was just terrible. That's the worst aspects of human nature.

I just don't want people to start getting so outraged that something like murder might burn in their heart, which would be taking things up a notch to the next level of depravity and evil, if you stop to really think about it..

One thing is for sure, those white girls protesting are in no danger of being dragged, they weigh like 50 pounds, everyone of them.

Rarely is anyone completely dispassionate about such a topic but people can remain objective while simultaneously holding opinions. We can both agree that we view slavery is evil while being cognizant of historical context. Thank you for explaining (and I also read back a little bit) but I'm just not sure I buy your argument that the there is a signficant lack of objectivity in the teaching of American history regarding slavery.

Either that or I was extremely fortunate to receive unusually good history instruction at public schools in the rural South.

What I do believe is that there is a significant level of ignorance regarding the topic but that's true of quite a lot of history. That problem is exacerbated by agenda-driven disinformation about history that people are exposed to later in life.

I do agree that emotion certainly interferes with objectivity — that's a given — I guess I simply believe that it's a bigger problem later in people's lives as they're more likely to fall victim to things like confirmation bias. The best way to mitigate that problem is for people to further their own education. That said, it seems unlikely that most people would ever be bothered to invest the time when they're content to watch a YouTube video, read a short social media post, etc that doesn't challenge their beliefs and incorporate myth and disinformation that reinforces their existing worldview.

Look at this thread. How many of the posters are going off half-cocked, so emotionally triggered by this video of a single incident that they're making irrational statments and all but calling for a race war? That's not any more rational than the people in the video attacking that man for being white if that's in fact what happened. (not saying it isn't, I'm just leery of viral Internet videos lacking any provenance)
