Do you know what earpiece they were referring to in those emails?

Do you know what a monitor is? As another member suggested earlier, it may have been a monitor so that she could hear everything that was being said. Sometimes, depending on the situation and venue, you do not have speakers directed at the stage because it could cause feedback issues with microphones nearby. That is why you use a monitor earpiece. I've used them many times and they help tremendously.
