The Last Tidbit
“No. Nonono. We are not entering any more caves!”

“It’s not a proper cave! It appears to be a tunnel, there’s something shining bright on the other side!”

“Are you mad!? After what we just experienced, you would dare step foot into something even resembling a cave!?”

He winked nonchalantly at her and started traipsing over to the nearby rock-face, a confident stride in his step as though he knew she would follow him.

Sighing to herself, she took one last longing glance over the ocean waters and unenthusiastically began to follow Darien, inwardly rebuking herself the entire time.

With the lingering sounds of the ocean echoing through her ears, Kaelci finally, and grudgingly, made her way to where Darien was standing. The cliff smooth and near perfectly vertical, the gentle breeze wafting individual grains of sand into the crevice that stood before them, the jagged scar within the stony face glaring back at her.

Kaelci gave Darien a questioning glance, and seeing nothing but his infuriatingly boyish grin in response, she bent down to peer into this crack that he seemed so excited about; it did indeed seem like a tunnel, and the inside seemed a lot larger than what the outer crevice appeared, a bright light glimmering on the other side.

She gave Darien one more glance, attempting to appeal to his good nature, and sent him an awkward smile, a pleading tone to her voice.

“Wouldn’t you rather stay here… on this beautiful beach? Do you really want to go in there!?”

“Yes!”

He flashed her that grin once more and swiftly squeezed into the crevice, seemingly uncaring if Kaelci followed him or not, knowing full well that she would… and she did. She squeezed through the crack, sucking her tummy in so as not to scrape her robes along the sharp rocky edges, and she soon stood within this greater area, an ominous feeling swarming her as she suddenly felt unwelcome inside this dark passageway.

Hugging her arms to herself, she hurried towards Darien who had rapidly strode through at least half of this lengthy passageway, and quickly reached out to touch his arm, to halt his steps.

“Darien… this doesn’t feel right… I think this tunnel was meant to be hidden, we weren’t meant to find it!”

Her attempt to halt his steps didn’t work as planned, and she found herself being dragged along by the cheerful man as he walked with such exuberance, his cheeky smile still plastered on his face as he sent her a wink.

“It’s just your imagination, young miss. Come! We’re almost there!”

Swallowing heavily, she forced her legs to match Darien’s enthusiastic pace, and within moments they stood at the end of the tunnel and gazed out into the other side… a breathless moment of anguish as she saw that the light they had seen was actually hundreds of thousands of tiny well-lit jars! The silhouette of a fairy within each one. Trapped.

A tear rolled down her cheek and she pinched Darien’s arm sharply, annoyed that he had dismissed the despairing energy that coursed about her.

“It was not my imagination.”
