There's nothing at all wrong with the speed of this site when it's not getting DDOS. You seem to be going way off on tangents that are not applicable to the issues. What does any of that have to do with DDOS? You need gear starting closer to $10K to effectively filter out bad traffic, they usually have dozens of coprocessors.

You could also uses a cheap multi-homed
(i.e. multiple network cards in a computer)
that filters packets based upon IP ADDRESS
REGIONS so you can find out if DDOS comes
from a specific series of IP ADDRESSES and
then filter them out with IP address filtering
software.

One network card examines ONLY addresses
in the 204.xxx.xxx.xxx to 258.xxx.xxx.xxx range
(i.e. as an example IP4 address range) and
the second one looks at addresses 80.xxx.xxx.xxx
to 128.xxx.xxx.xxx, etc and packets coming
one-after-another from any given range
can be filtered out WITHOUT the use
of a $10,000 firewall appliance.

So if your packets keep coming from 204.174.xx.0
to 204.174.xx.255 then kill those IP connections
temporarily. DDOS attacks TEND to come from
SPECIFIC IP ADDRESS ranges which CAN be filtered
out --- I have suggested using multi-network cards
in a separate computer between your main server's
Cable/ADSL/Fibre router and the telco itself as a
firewall system for some time now and it has
worked BETTER than a $10,000 Sonicwall firewall box!

With all the fear generated in this thread,
along with some great sounding suggestions,
I am surprised an Admin has not been back to respond ... 🙁

---

I think the Multi-homing is the CHEAPEST solution
to preventing DDOS attacks because each card
(you can put between 4-to-8 network cards in
a single computer) set be setup to ONLY ACCEPT
data requests from specific IP address ranges
which are MONITORED for unusual traffic and
then shut down if that traffic from a specific
address range is overwhelming the main servers!

Your thought and mine.

We're here, there's just not much else to say. It is what it is, the free independent web as we know it now is in grave danger of disappearing.

Not the big media outlets, who have done more to make sure this happened than ANY advertiser or hacker, just us little guys.

Thank you for your reply.

I hope we don't have to rent a moving Truck.

We have some great contributors here at ATS. Quake Watch, Volcano Watch, etc.

Thank you for replying Springer, much appreciated.

Sad to think that is happening here on the net as well as the push by big business in the "real world" ...

I do hope you can find a workable solution that is both financially viable and user friendly. 😎

Fingers crossed !

We are a resilient crew....so hopefully there will be no goodbye.

Thank you, we often cross paths and seem to follow the same thought lines. I always enjoy your post also.

It looks like a fun project, I'd be willing to build out an 8 nic server to test out it's DDOS protection capacities, but honestly I don't think your assumption is correct that the attacks usually come from the same networks. IP is pretty well segregated and on the open market for grabs by any provider. I could easily get IP in different ranges on small vps and write some simple scripts to cause some damage, but it's just too easy and I think quite petty. Not my style.

I'll look into the links, it would be pretty cool to build a white box firewall appliance for a fraction of the cost.

Okay so, 'free'. What can be done to solve that issue?
I'm sure you great minds have ideas. Can you just throw them out there (assuming they exist) no matter how impossible or improbable or unrealistic they may seem? You may be surprised what the membership base of ATS is willing to do!

'Grave danger of disappearing'.
Any ideas on that?

It hasn't happened yet so IMO there's hope.

Isn't there?

One more question if you can answer. If the end of ATS IS inevitable, how much warning do you think we would have before the lights go out?

Maybe you can sell some gear.
No upfront costs here:
CafePress

Just upload your logo, sell some shirts and mugs or something, and... it might help?

My heart is heavy as I read this. What about payed subscriptions and for those who can't afford it, a sponsor can help? And is there anything the technically inclined in here can do to help? Please, throw us some ideas, some hope at least. I can't imagine this place going poof after all these years.
