I thank you but...

We're not allowed to talk about sex?

That makes me sad because I find that it is a part of human nature to be sexual, and it would be a shame to me if none of us were allowed to be open about it...

Because telling you what I like in bed isn't an invitation. Telling you I get horny doesn't mean I'm going to fug the first person I can. Talking about sex doesn't equal promiscuity, period. Which raises another question... what exactly is promiscuity? Like how many people do you have to sleep with to be considered promiscuous? What about our fantasies? If we think about it, does that count? If we think about having sex with lots of people, does that mean we are promiscuous? Are we really asking to implement the thought police? I certainly hope not.

And in the end what really stands out to me the most is... sex is natural. Humans are sexual. It is part of life. And as long as it's safe sex and everyone is being honest about it then... what's the big deal? It's not illegal to have several lovers within the span of one lifetime... in the present day of the United States of America. It's not illegal to be promiscuous, if that's what you want to be, as long as you're not committing adultery or other laws concerning age and authority and AIDS and etc.

Obama is certainly not saying, "HEY I WANT YOU TO FUG EVERYONE YOU CAN AND GET LOTS OF STDS." And he's not saying, "HEY I DON'T WANT ANY OF YOU TO PRACTICE ANY SELF CONTROL WHEN IT COMES TO SEX. JUST FUG ANYTHING IN SIGHT. TY." Cause seriously? Don't be silly. And being a rape victim myself I know about people's lack of self-control firsthand, and it's not cool. And oddly, I also know about sex shaming firsthand, too. And I know about victim shaming. And I just know... all of it is kind of messed up because quite frankly and as a matter of fact.... Sex is natural. And some people can't control themselves and that's not my fault. And I am not a ho for talking about sex or liking sex. It's human. And I refuse to be ashamed for being human.

Your silly new friend,
Louise.

Louise you are not going to get an argument from me on any of your points, because I agree. I think our entire society is based on hypocrisies.

Let me explain. Look at the porn industry for example it has absolutely nothing to do with love, or making love, but it objectifies sex, both for men and women, and diminishes, degrades, and disconnects people from each other.

We also have religion, wonderful religion shaming people for not behaving a certain way, or having to wait until marriage for sex, although this may seem idealistic, just as you say, it's against our natural sexual order as human beings. My point is I think there is a balancing somewhere in there from all out hot monkey sex with tons of people, to wearing a chastity belt.

I know people talk about sex, but I think it's all in the delivery. Making sex a shameful or forbidden thing has really got us into lots of issues. As a society we seem to get pulled in so many different directions.

Personally, I set ground rules in a relationship, with the other person, when things get intimately exclusive.

For example, if you and I had sex I would have no problem with you talking about it with your friends, just as long as you enhanced the story.

I guess what it comes down to is different strokes for different folks, but we need to be respective of people's choices, and not make them feel bad about those choices. If we can't handle someone's past history, then instead of torturing ourselves and the other person by shaming their sexuality and life choices, it's time to move on.

I tell my male friends if you can't handle the truth and live with it, then never ask, never tell.

to my newest silly and cool friend Louise,

RT

I know I don't. But I know a number who do.

Often? My experience varies from that but that is encouraging.

Perhaps Obama has seen too many college movies.
Yeah, well. They sure don't help the situation much.

Heh... We were always expendable in that regard.

The issue seems to be what the hell is the root of all this cavorting and mindless rutting? Where is romance in this, an age in which the first date is often had after the first sloppy encounter after a club night, a barely remembered fumble under unmade sheets, what is this age in which we live, and why does it seem to lack the emotional vibrancy that one might see as necessary to a healthy sexual existence. Furthermore, what can be done about it?

It is absolutely right and proper that a lady be afforded the same rights as a man, when it comes to perception of like behaviours. But what of the behaviours themselves? Is there any way to reclaim the romance that seems to be dead and buried, or has its day ended, and a new, colder, starker, and less nourishing thing taken its place?

I believe you have my generation to thank for this, we the snowflakes stand divided

We decided that we're all unique and special and should not be vilified for our 'different' choices.
I don't think the snowflakes are really that different, we're just a generation built on instant gratification.

More typical Obama rambling on about BS that is completely off the wall. Why don't he ever talk about what he has done for this country...that's right because he hasn't done anything.

I suppose you heard his address, or read it.
Since you have such a strong opinion about it.

Talk about sex all you like. I don't know too many people who would regard you as promiscuous for talking a lot about sex or being horny at times. Just don't demonstrate a double standard. If it's okay for women to talk openly about sex and get horny at times then it ought to be the same for men. What usually happens when men do these things? They are labelled as pigs obsessed with sex, ridiculed for not keeping their feelings to themselves.

You could have read the article linked in the OP, but here you go:
www.whitehouse.gov...

Thanks, as you know, his speech was NOT in the OP's link. Just those couple of quotes.

-And since the OP's topic was "why do such differing attitudes towards male and female sexuality exist?" reading Obama's speech wasn't real relevant. But as long as no one is complaining about how this has gone off the rails...

Huh?
The title is "Barack Obama says women should not be shamed for having sex while men get a pat on the back."

What are you on about?

The thing is, this was a speech given at the White House Summit of the United States of Women.
The subject of this whole event is womens rights. It is a feminist event. It is the same one that other threads are focusing on things Michele Obama spoke on.

He could not really speak of other things there.

But as far as whether or not this slut shaming and clapping on backs behavior is actually a current problem, the article linked to in the OP points out-

A 2013 University of Illinois at Chicago study of roughly 24,000 college students found young men are more likely than their female peers to hold the traditional double standard.
The majority, however, didn't subscribe to the old beliefs: 66 percent of men and 70 percent of women said they didn't sex-shame based on gender. (Some indicated they thought promiscuity was off-putting regardless of your sex.)

But I'm finding that this is much like the other thread on Michelle's speech- one sentence has been taken out for discussion, but it is not reflecting at all the overall tone, or focus. It was literally two sentences amongst a whole run down of feminist agenda.

-And he did include the contradicting evidence that these things are no longer problems in other parts of the speech. Like the women are expected to remain silent and demeure, while men are expected to be assertive, then later going on about how great it is women today were not raised with that idea at all and it would never cross their minds.

Basically, it is a speech geared towards hailing the changes that happened back in the sixties, and the women who did it, mixed with the usual trend of button pushing, polarizing victimization words that the feminists love to keep throwing around, just for the emotional impact upon crowds.

You only read the title?

This is the OP:

I never truly understood that whole thing about the more lovers a man has, the more he should be looked up to and the more a woman has, the more we should look down on her.

Why are women shamed for enjoying sex but men are not?

That's it. That's the topic.

An aspect of the topic, of course. But to say that the President's address is irrelevant is a specious claim since is clearly a central point (being the title, and stuff).

You, and others, seem to find the address of interest. Apart from reading it, that is.

Precisely the pair bonding ability is often so diminished that a society ends up with 70% divorce rates, higher instances of single mommy hood (which our legal system systematically promotes), and of course our favorite: higher crime rates as a by-product.

I think anyone who buys into the kool-aid obama and his handlers dish out is crazy.

The old ways were good at restraining women's natural instinct to bang the top 10-20% of men only and thus ensuring that so called beta males could have a shot a passing on their genes on top of ensuring strong intact families which we see are under attack in our modern societies.

Whatever though if people want to have their fun so be it just know that I am buying up cat food, wine, and virtual reality stocks.

Yes, I find it of interest- that is why I said, if there is no complaints about how we're going off topic, then I am great with this.

But when I first entered the thread, I was focusing on the question of why such attitudes exist, not Obama and what kind of President he is, nor the entire speech he made (because this phrase was only a very very small point in it. I think the OP made it clear they had no intent of exploring all the rest of that speech).

Agreed and really this entire planet lacks discipline when it comes to this sort of thing. Divide and conquer is still in full effect and these fools cannot see it.
