Well, as a newbi on ATS for less than 1 month i need to voice my comment. I'm astonished at the "low level" mentality comments of many members. It's like a "cat fight" in the back ally, back and forth on most subjects. Picky here and picky there, negative here and negative here. I ask WHY does this mentality exist? Members have a great outlet with ATS to voice their constructive comments, objections and personal points of view. I would appreciate any VALID comments, maybe i'm missing something about ATS........

Elections got everyone in their little worlds. Hell, maybe the election has nothing to do with it and thats just how we are now. All compartmentalized.

There are still some good discussions here

Get a "thick skin" or don't post.

You see how the game is played right? So you either choose to play knowing you will get lambasted or choose not to play. I don't think it is any different than any other forum on the internet. Read comment sections if available under any new article.

You could say the sky is blue and someone will want to argue with you!

It's the internet, don't take ANYTHING personal! One way to deny anothers free speech is to ridicule them to the point they no longer want to be heard nor participate.

It's your choice.....

You have been on Internet forums before right?
You have been in the real world right?

If the answer to those two questions is a yes then nothing about what you are seeing here should be surprising.

Because everyone thinks their opinion is the correct one and to re-evaluate their stance is a sign of weakness, not a strength.

Besides, it's still the Internet and trolls will keep a trolling.

Like all debate two opposing sides reveal their motives and bent to the reader, so you get both sides. Sometimes it becomes heated, sometimes insult or ridicule is used to disrupt the conversation. If you let it bother you, its working. Just filter the information, leave the bicker out of it.

Don't let the tail wag the dog.

Separate from those types of discussions if you feel negatively affected by them

Oh that - that's just the daily banter we engage in when we know exactly which buttons to push to get a reaction from our lovable fellow members. The "picky here and picky there, negative here and negative there" usually occurs before everyone has had a chance to have their morning coffee or 4.

Although we're mainly immersed in political shenanigans at the moment and it appears that there is crap being flung from every direction, there is an actual community here that hopefully you will come to enjoy as much as I do.

When I first joined I spent about 6 months reading all the top flagged threads from all the forums - believe you me, herein lies some absolutely amazing contributors - don't worry about the current bitchiness, it'll pass.

Unfortunately thats how it is here now.
Its always the same handful that have to piss and moan about everything.
To bad there wasnt a way to block out the comments of those individuals.
People would enjoy posting a lot more here.

Your first sentence says it all. You don't learn, and become a part of a community this size and this diverse in a month. It takes time. Don't let the veneer fool you. I may argue with some members here until we're blue in the face, but they're still valuable, and I'm glad to have them here. A lack of vehemently dissenting voices makes for a dull and lifeless forum, as well as an atmosphere of ignorance. That person on the other end chewing your ass is your teacher, and you are theirs. I learn something from every exchange I have here.

I ask WHY does this mentality exist?

It's because our society is rife with USI (unwarranted self-importance), and illusory superiority.

We need to distinguish between on-topic and off-topic negativity.
On-topic negativity may be necessary, because sorting out the truth involves a critical approach to what might not be true.
But off-topic negativity, genuine trolling, is a real problem as well, and there you might have a point.
You need to learn to respond to both kinds in the most appropriate way.

Once you get the hang of this, it will all make sense. The fact that I am always right should become readily apparent. Once you have a handle on that, we can move on to how wrong everyone else is.

You're supposed to wait until we break them in a little longer before you reveal that.

Sorry princess, this isn't like your normal safe space. You might need to not be so easily triggered if you want to jump into the controversial topics.

..

just kidding with you, but in all debates, there will always be the occasional low blow. normally mods are good at preventing thread drift.
Also, consider the topic. Go on a thread about ancient civilizations or alien encounters and overall it will be respectful, considerate, and focused on the subject.
Go on to a politics right v left issues (especially things dealing with sexism, racism, etc) and you are gonna get naked tribalism and insults. If you like that kind of thing, and know how to not cross the line, have at it..otherwise, best avoid those topics...in life...forever

That's alright. We just can't have every Tom, Dick, and Harry knowing we have an omniscient entity among us. Imagine the fallout ND.

Indeed, the quality has decreased over the last couple of months, but that usually happens during these election cycles. Hopefully it will all go back to normal next year.
