The white wolf whined when the dragons took flight and were far from site. "They shall be missed." The friends all stared at the wolf.
"When did you learn to speak?" asked Hugo, astounded by the new voice. Night Star was stunned. She could always communicate with him telepathically,
but this, this was amazing! "Wolf how is it that you can speak like the rest of us now?" If a wolf could smile, he would be smiling. "When I went off
with Shadow the wolf Lord and the other wolves of his kind. Before the witch war and a little afterward." They all laughed and the elf hugged him
close.
Garren looked to Night Star. "So you know mermaids? Somehow I am not surprised. I have never seen such a lovely creature before and I have seen and
communicated with many creatures. Where are we off to now if I may ask?" "To the Dark Star Inn, though I believe they changed the name to The Dark
Star Tavern now. We'll go back to the shed and pack some things first." They headed to the forest and heard a rustling from behind. As they turned,
there stood a tall dark clothed figure with long black shiny hair. It was the feline being Taylon. Night closed her eyes and tried to harden her heart
in fear it would break into a thousand pieces.
There was never any closure when their relationship ended. The King and Queen of the feline beings forbade their union, as the blood of the species
must be pure and other beings would never be accepted as one of their own. They simply sent Taylon off on some mission and that was the last they had
ever seen of each other until the witch war when they briefly saw and spoke to each other. She opened her eyes as the others moved along on the path,
leaving them in privacy.
Taylon stood so tall and proud, broad shoulders pulled back and head held high. "We must speak. We can't keep running away from what we know to be
pure and true in our hearts." He stepped forward and took her hand. "Don't make me beg, please speak to me." All she could do was stare into his eyes
silently, searching for words that never came yet spoke volumes. "I know you still love me Night, I have always known and I have never forgotten, not
for one moment have I forgotten you." Falling to her knees, she allowed the tears to fall and she wept for the loss of her one true love. The feline
being knelt beside her and held her close. "This is not the end. It never ended, not in our minds, not in our souls. It was always there Night. it
always will be. You know this to be true, why do you fight it so?"
The beautiful elf wiped her tears away with the hem of her gown. "You and I...can never be. We are different you and I and your people would never
allow it. You are a Prince of the felines and I am a warrior Elf. What future would that be for us? We would be scorned and it wouldn't be right or
fair. You have a commitment to your people and must honor that commitment. Please, don't make this harder than it has to be. I will not be a part of
your ruin. I will only wish you the best that life has to offer. Hold your place of power and use it wisely."
"Is it right or fair for us that we must go the rest of our lives wondering of what could have been, the intense love and joy of our union?" Slowly
they stood as the wind whipped their hair around their faces. "No Taylon, it is not fair. There is much in life that is not fair. You were born into a
position of obligation to the people of your Kingdom and cannot abandon them. Your Father is old and you are his only heir. I will always love you
Taylon. No one will ever take your place in my heart, not ever, but you must leave now and never see me again." She ran as fast as the wind, over moss
and twigs and grasses, swatting the low hanging branches as they obstructed her sight. She ran until she could hardly breath and never looked
back.
