Seeing this thread brought up a recent conversation I had with my wife about pregnancy and how so many men are completely ignorant to what women go through to have a child.

I told her that I was ashamed of how most men behave during and after a time of pregnancy and that I think there should be a few laws enacted when it comes to this.

First, I would like to applaud all the women who have helped to keep this world plentiful. Second, I would like to give a big hand to all the men who do get it. Third, if there is anything I missed in my anecdote below, please, do not hesitate to chime in.

Men should have to emulate all of the woman's behavior patterns. They should have to strap an 8 lb. watermelon to their bellies for the duration. They should have to refrain from any and all drugs or alcohol. They should have to take prenatal vitamins and any other required intake for a normal pregnancy. They should be required to go to all doctor's visits and lamaz classes. They should be forced to eat any cravings the wife has. They should be required to gain 60 lbs. and get stretch marks. They should have to get an epidural when the time comes for delivery. If she has to have a c-section then he has to get opened up too, so that he has the scar and the painful recovery.

All this is fine and dandy before the child comes into this world, at least then men would have some clue, but this does not even touch the tip of the iceberg for what a woman has to go through after the birth.

Post-partum depression, episiotomy, breast feeding and a house that becomes a complete mess. After the birth, the man should be required to stay home with the exception of going to work. No hanging out at the sports bar and going to strip clubs. If he gets caught doing anything other than going to the pharmacy or grocery store or running errands for his wife, he goes to jail. He is required to do all diaper changes while at home. He is required to do the morning feeding and the nightly feeding not depending on breast for milk (if the wife does that).

Many men shun their wives after a pregnancy and look for sex outside the marriage, shame on you jerks. The miracle of birth that a married couple can share is the most amazing experience and I am appalled at the behavior that many men exhibit during and after. Sure, there are some men that are sensitive like I am and wouldn't dare sully the lesson in life by disrespecting their wife or girlfriend, but we are far and few between. At least it is better than it was during my parents generation, but like racism, we have a very long way to go before we reach an acceptable standard.

I recently passed a kidney stone. I was writhing in pain. I didn't scream, but I won't claim I was brave either.

The very skilled nurse said to me, "that's the closest you'll ever come to childbirth, and it isn't really very close at all." She was compassionate and I thanked her afterward and appreciated her care and skill. I believe her.

I went though Lamaze classes almost 40 years ago with a friend of mine who was single and alone. I was not the father, but a friend. I was in attendance thoughout the childbirth. It was a horrifying and also beautiful experience. Mostly the former. It was far worse for her, of course, and her event was characterized as a "fairly easy childbirth." Whoof!

The wife saved this to show me, I watched my tiny daughter go through hell with a big 8.2 lb'er. Respect I have.

I disagree with the cravings. Why make a man eat something that is often disgusting just because the wife is craving it? If you are craving it, you want it. I mean, if someone craves pickle juice and ice cream, it's because it will taste good to her, but there is no way it's tasting good to anyone else, not even other women who have had their own strange cravings and get what that's like.

Of course men don't.

I would be very surprised if men didn't know how react to a certain threat????

The first S&F from me. 4 children and 37 years later , and I still dont get it. Those times , coming home from work with tomato soup , fried chicken , pickles , and Hershey Almond bars for dinner. The tremendous mood swings at the blink of an eye.And the all encompassing feelings of sharing and caring. Cant forget those

I roll my eyes whenever men demean each other by name=calling a female body part... You know what I mean.

Yes, compared to a kidney stone, its different, but way way more intense. And when you're done birthing the baby, the doc pushes on your belly (hard) to get rid of the placenta, and then, someone has to come and give you stitches in an area that you'd just as soon not have touched with a needle and thread... It's hard work, bloody and painful and beautiful and mind-blowing when the little being from your belly opens their eyes with a whole universe inside them.

So anytime you all call each other a "woman part," I think, "yeah, you WISH you could be that strong and that brave..." *eye roll*

Now, don't get me wrong. I respect men. I just wish some of them would stop saying how "weak" we are to make themselves feel strong, because it isn't accurate and it's insulting. They're strong without that. But whatever. If they want to live with that particular delusion, let them.

wow this is a horrible idea, make laws? essentially making a man a women and get the government even further involved in the family setting(because the gov is crushing it when it comes to family right?) If we were all the same and had the same experiences it would be a boring world. I am happy i dont have to go through what women go through and i will be the first to break your stupid laws.

i dont always agree with this guy but he is entertaining and brings up some good points, this video is just for fun though and its pertains to the topic of disscusion.

Why is the hell do I even need to "understand" pregnancy?

I've never had a kidney stone, I've never had a period, I've never had a sucking chest wound, either.

Let me know when your guilt goes so far as to you shoving an 8lb bowling ball up your ass. Then, I just may listen to any other advice. I've got 3 kids and my wife enjoyed carrying them, on the whole. Stop pushing your self hate on the rest of us.
Laws Written!!?? How whipped are you?

This has to be one the stupidest, most ignorant things I have seen on ATS in a long while...and that's saying something. This coming from a woman who has given birth to four children (the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, in case you were wondering...)

We have way too many laws as it is.... I'm sick to death of people's response in trying to control others thoughts and behaviors through law. There are some laws that are necessary to punish serious crimes against another - murder, rape, etc... But our most sacred laws are meant to LIMIT government....not extend it.

Women have been pregnant from the beginning of humanity and have managed pretty well so far. Why encourage more manipulation of society?

Just to add: While I appreciate and understand your views for posting your thread, I can only hope your desire for actual legislation was just an expression of frustration of a historic issue that has been ignored by some males.

I think I "get" what women go through as much as any man who has not been a parent himself. I wouldn't want to change places and have the utmost respect for the courage and pain women go through to bear a child. My Darlin' and me chose not to have children and then [insert diety] or nature doubled-down that decision by rendering her incapable of it.

If there were any legislation related to this, I would like to see enforcement of existing laws that require men contributing to the pregnancy provide for the child............... forever........... as the mother has to, assuming that a decision has been mutually made to have the child. Please let my comments not steer this thread off-topic into abortion debates.

Star for you Sargeras. I was trying to figure out a way to reply to OP, but i think you summed it up well. Oh and OP, try not to take offense to all of these replies. Something about getting stung when you hit the beehive? yes? no?

ETA: I "get" it as much as the next guy can, but passing legislature? Come on man....I'm really trying not to be a dick right now
