"Then almost every damn neighbor jumped in.. like a true Pittsburgher. No one's business was deemed gossip and everyone's business."

OMG, you nailed a concise description of Pgh. (and surrounding communities) with those sentences above. While the strong ethnic ties of the region result in great food and festivals it also results in cronyism and a lot of angst. Every ethnic pocket thinks they're the best and the right ones. Throw in economic distress after the steel mills closed and you've got financial status angst too.

I've had the pleasure of working among the some of the finest examples of the sort like your bro in law. I would carefully avoid any discussion involving politics, religion or sports because I never felt strongly enough about any of them to get into yelling match and/or borderline fist fight. You seem to have a sense of humor about it though. You really have to, to deal with the local weirdness. Imagine the looks I get when I say I don't care about the sports teams here or any sports.

Just remind them of "No taxation without representation". The whole point of that rallying cry was that an adult citizen shouldn't be bound by laws if they have no say in them. Otherwise it's not a democracy; it's a dictatorship.

Citizenship in a democracy includes perks like being able to vote & run for office. These literally allow the citizen to be a part of the political system (which is the whole point of a democracy). Citizenship also includes responsibilities like serving on a jury, paying taxes, serving in the military if drafted, agreeing to follow the laws, etc.

I'm convinced that a lot of people here don't really like democracy. Or to be blunt, they only want some citizens to have the perks of a democracy while wanting to deny democratic rights & privileges to other citizens. That's not aimed at you, but at the person who said this to you.

Yuck as Both a Navy Vet and a Property owner the guy your talking about sounds like a total excuse the phrase Foxtrot-Uncle who obviously forgotten what it means to wear that Uniform.

While I may be an advocate for a minimum 2 year forced conscription after High school (mainly for the Life Skills and the Travel opportunity) with the option of making a longer career. I do not think Voting should in any way be limited by Service or Not, and Honestly I lived as a renter for about 8 years from the time I got out, I would not want property tied to that either.

The only thing that should be tied to it is Appropriate age for Contracts (which can be as low as 16 honestly with emancipation paperwork), and Citizenship. (Natural Born or Legally Immigrated [clarification finished everything not in process])

America hasn't been invaded since 1812. So not one single veteran alive has "defended our freedom".

I'm a veteran, and I believe only vets should be able to vote.

But why land owners?

Why should someone get a vote because they are rich compared to most Americans?

Why do you think we haven't been invaded?

Perhaps our military?

Well considering after 1812 no one really bothered us at all and we had a really weak military up til WW2 I'd say no.

Why should you get a vote over say a Refuse collector or a Seamstress.? What makes you the special one.?

Since WW2 industrial military might has gone world wide.

Since WW2 Russia would have likely invaded us if not for our nukes and military.

Only our military strength stopped Stalin from going after the world.

Hence settled for all of East Europe, because we wouldn't let him take more.

That is what caused the cold war.

So you had a proper Irish weekend? I skipped it since the parade had everything shut down.
Let me remind you, every family has "One of those". Can't tell you some of the fun hissy's invoked by family members over
politics and my being the only member to "serve" in a democratic family who also had the bad taste to go republican.
Your particular "Richard" is playing big fish in small pond games.
I'd refer him to Oathkeepers so they can pull his undies out of his crack. Actually I'm surprised some of the older guys in the Vet groups haven't laid his ears back for him yet.

Pgh families are unique in their isolated views of things dependent on what neighborhood they come from.
Really....we need to get out more.

The Burg lives in quite a little bubble.

Because he thinks his job choice makes him a speshul snowflake with speshul rights.

Ain't how it works. And if that's how he thinks it works, he's free to try to find public support to change voter laws. Or leave the country when the pitchforks come after him for trying, his choice.

Because I took responsibility for the security of this land, at the risk of life and limb.

And I have been a refuse collector.

Being a soldier is much harder and pays worse.

You get a lot of that with todays ex military. The older generation when they came back from a "Real War" couldn't even talk about it. They wanted and expected nothing and just got on with things.

Todays ex Military seem to think we should all bow down and worship at there feet. They should remember this, When you invade a foreign country, you are not fighting for anyone's freedom, The guys shooting back are fighting for their Freedom.

What backtrack?

As I said, " I believe ".

Just as I already stated, my opinion, nothing more.

As you continue your idiotic high horse ranting.

Once again, troll fail

Hmm " real war".....

Yes because bullets and explosives were were more lethal back then right?

No, they are in fact much more lethal today?

Hhmmmm, that's ironic.

How exactly would Russia have invaded the US? I'm curious how you think it would have been possible at all.

Once we developed the first nuke, our country became that much more untouchable. No troops needed, just scientists and engineers.

Jesus... we'd live in a nightmare if that were the case. I'm thinking feudalism pre-Crusade Franks or just a
straight up military aristocracy if that happened.

I really doubt he would be saying that if he were found unfit to serve when he enlisted.

I'm a firm believer that everyone, regardless of disability, can serve some role in the military.

Even if it is only answering phones or stapling papers.

Everyone should serve, and nobody should be denied if they wish to.

It takes more than soldiers to make it all go around.

Politics and sports are very big here. And even though every "Hill or District" still remains very ethnic. They all share a common trait. Nosy and full of oppinions. You can tell who the transplants are like myself.☺
