TA this one is rather big for Yellowstone is it not? I know we have had them in the past but isn't it rare?

There was a 3.7 in the same area of yellowstone a few days ago. Not sure how relevant that is.

I set my app for 7+ earthquakes for the past year and then went to do something and forgot about it and then when I opened it a few hours later to check the daily eq's I had a mini heart attack when I saw a red list of 7's

Skipped a few beats there!

Hi! I was wondering the same thing when I saw that nobody had been there since April! I was hoping Eric had commented after that one. WOQ

3.1 is not strong, 3's are "minor".
For all the number of aftershocks near Borrego Springs the actual energy released was small and came from the 5.17 main shock. Some of the aftershocks are so small they are equal to slamming a door shut.
The interest there is in the direction of the aftershocks and the possibility that another part of the Fault breaks. Actually the main shock wasn'the even on the fault itself but between two faults. Check on your USGS interactive map and set your map to show the faults.

Just wanted to add, Brawley is just south of the Salton Sea, and right on the San Adrea's.

Nr Amami-Oshima Is has taken off again ( previous activity in January)

My mistake, these are at "Nr Minami-Daitojima Is." which started off with a 5.6 and a 5.2 on May 27th 2016 and I have been following on japanearthquakes. I had 276 aftershocks up to the 11th June, but can add another 102 aftershocks in the 11th-14th June period.
The location of this series is actually half way between Amami-Oshima Is and Minami-Daitojima Is, but is called Nr Minami-Daitojima Is because of the JMA area naming, it is right on the Philippine/Okinawa/Amurian Plate Junction subduction zone.
SSW of the N Philippine/Shikoku Basin activity of Jan/Feb this year.
SE of the SW of Kyushu 7.1 series going on since Dec 2015.
Certainly a busy area the last 6 months

It looks like these two 5.5 and 5.2 are in between the May 5.6 and 5.2
no data on the 2nd 5.5 location yet from NIED

I just added the new 4 days worth of data and updated the Timeline graph for this, see link in post above. The best map to see the locations of the two new Fives, is the 2nd Bing map.
Could be Volcanic in origin, seems to be a surge in size of quakes every five days, like a "pulse"
the 5's and the aftershocks are all centred under Inutabu Seamount, but I can't find anything to say it is active
This is still a young series though
will be interesting to see what develops
if anything

The 5th magnitude 5 was just one event past that last update.
So 5 x M5's in this series 5.6, 5.2, 5.5, 5.2, 5.2
I have had to split the series into 200/197/last# Bing Maps as I did with SW of Kyushu and Kumamoto, at this stage the best map to see where the M5's were at is the "last28" map
Quite unusual for Japan for so many 5's without a bigger Main Event, usually it takes a M7 to pop this many 5's out.

Hopefully the Bing maps work for you readers, if not on your mobile, at least on a laptop or desktop. It takes a bit of work to build each separate map and not get confused. Unfortunately it's the only way to show interactive map and list data currently, the NZ Topo map is OK for an overview but it doesn't come with a side list.
