Why Do You Need A HOLIDAY to give a CRAP?

WOW. I hate holidays. They are just so full of hypocritical rhetoric crap. Every time a holiday comes around people suddenly pretend to give a crap. Why does it take a fake commercialized holiday of any kind for HUMANS to give a crap? Oh Happy Thanksgiving, now lets go beat each other up over sales on material crap. Oh Merry Freaking Christmas...now lets return all the presents we didn't like and while we are at it blow up a few mosques. Great, Happy New Year...another holiday to go get drunk and kill a family of 4...AWESOME....can't wait for Valentine's Day to tell the one you want to have sex with how much you love them....here now put this sexy lingerie on while I search for the Happy Easter eggs...oh wait nothing like a Fourth Of July to blow up fingers....Hooray.

Holidays are the excuse to not giving a crap the rest of the year. After all, the season of giving and caring comes but once a year.

Sort of like religion, too. We pray, we give it to god, some use that as the excuse to not have to actually lend a hand.

You sound like me, like I used to be. But my hatred of holidays left me so estranged from all those I love, and those who love me, that I found that even though they were in many ways only pretending to be happy during the holidays, that I could pretend along with them

I will be getting drunk just for you, and then my girl will put on her sexy stuff if I ask her to, but then she loves to make me happy.

What you are saying is not true.

There are churches, organizations, and a lot of just plain good people, that care for the poor and the needy, all year round. The fact that there are special days that are celebrated, has more to do with spreading the joy outside of individual spaces to a broader community.

In my job we serve the community 24/7. We contribute to the special days of celebration within our communities, and we have our own month, were we put on events, and have celebrations, to keep the communities aware that we are there for them before, or in hopes of avoiding an incident where they may need us.

People don't need special days to care, it is just the cherry on top.

Sorry you're so bitter, life is pretty great when one isn't so angry all the time.

Wow, focusing on the negative must make life extremely bleak for you! In my experience, none of the holidays and related effects are anything at all like you describe. They do describe the worst of the worst - the "bottom 0.05%" of humanity maybe. I'm sorry such a tiny minority of negativity has become your complete focus.

But I feel you, OP. Holidays are what TPTB/govt give us so we can tolerate them oppressing us for the rest of the year.

Down here in Colombia, this country has the most holidays of any country in the world....

The govt blatantly treats them like #, but they are generally a happy people...why? Probably the sunshine ....and muchos holidays.

You should at least realize you can get something out of the season. The ability to at least RANT about how you get nothing out of the season.

At least that's something! Then you can go back to regular ranting for the next whole year.

I did a social experiment yesterday. I had to go to the library. My neighbor just gave birth 2 days before, at home I might add. We still do things like that in the country, so I called to find out if she needed anything while I was out. It is a 20 minute drive on a dirt road that is more like a pasture than a road, and bumpy to boot, so I don't see her making that trip anytime soon.

I took her request and this added shopping to my chores. I knew the stores would be packed, so I decided I was going to be super happy about the shopping, and treat everyone with good cheer.

I gave everyone a giant smile and greeted everyone with a jubilant Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

I must have said that phrase a hundred times if not more. Every single person, and child returned my smile and my greeting. Those that seemed in a hurry or annoyed, I gave a little extra attention, and was quite pleased to see their demeanor soften and quiet.

Of course it will be said that because I live in the country, and country people are different, is why it worked. Not necessarily. Country folk can be just as mean and ornery as any other group, in some cases they can be worse, because they have poor control of their tongues. And for those that will claim it is because of the demographic, we have all groups present and accounted for in my area. We don't have a mosque out here but we do have Muslims, and we have Shiks, as well as all the usual religions. We even have a Wiccan group that celebrates with drummings.

I think most people pick up and respond to what you project. Project love, happiness and a sincere, I like you, and most of the time, it is what you will get back.

I really dig some of the stuff you post but, I wanted to give you my perspective...

I don't really give a crap!
The things I do, I do for those I love. I like to do a little extra special at this time of the year.

I am in anguish! I am unable to sleep, eat, or be jolly yet, I fake it not just at Christmas but, all of the time for my girls.

I would long to wallow into a dark place, with no light, no sound, no touch, no emotion but, I CAN'T!

There are those that need me not just today or tomorrow but, every day and every tomorrow...

We celebrate traditions. We celebrate the past and the future. We celebrate that WE and those we love are happy, relatively, healthy, and okay...today...we do our part for our community and then we rest.

The girls make cookies and the like and walk around the neighborhood giving things away. Just earlier, you may or may not believe this but, they asked if they could take their gifts to the shelter and hand out.
One year, my youngest went with my sister's wife to hand out gifts to people who signed up for the fire department, of which my sister's wife is an auxiliary person, and they have been "ruined" (LOL ) ever since...

I think, for us, Christmas is time to reflect on the past year. The ups and downs and enjoy the spoils of our labor.

We always do the "bed in a bag" this time of year because they are always on sale...
The old man works 80 hours a week but, gets off on Christmas. This is great fun for the girls...he misses so much...
His family always comes to our gatherings. They can't afford food most of the time, we feed them often but they are far away, so it is special for them to come and enjoy a home cooked meal and a few gifts.

It is hard to not cry and be sad...not because it is Christmas (a commercialized holiday) but, because another year is almost gone, there is so much suffering in the world, and those we love can't be with us...
