Excellent demonstration, but I think that people are also missing the obvious: the picture has been cropped from a much larger one.

True. Cropping is another possibility (and my image above of the large moon rising over the mountains may have also been cropped, along with being a zoom/telephoto lens).

However, the two images from Apollo 11 that I posted above are uncropped, and the different sizes of the Earth is due to the difference in focal length.

Yes there could be cropping but you guys do realize the moon's orbit is elliptical, right? Photos taken at apogee and perigee will be vastly different.

I decided I could be bothered to download the full resolution Chandrayaan image covering Compton crater.

Here's a crop of that image showing the mountain range and some of the channels in the foreground of the LRO image:

And here's a close up of one of the peaks - on the left Chandrayaan, on the right LRO:

I await the inevitable 'India is in on it...' comments.

Beautiful but the lunar surface looks incredibly fake.

Why are they so reluctant to show us what's on the moon I wonder.

How does it look fake? Please elaborate. What do you think the real lunar surface should look like?

Why are they so reluctant to show us what's on the moon I wonder.

They _are_ showing us what's on the Moon, in unprecedented detail.

I can only but laugh at the folks who think this is fake.. or the surface of the moon is fake. Do you think they take these pictures with polaroid cameras? Are you all really experts on photography and lighting... and can definitively say the shadows are "wrong?" We certainly have a light of incredibly genius people on this site! We see it in every thread though.. experts in science, politics, physics, etc.. it's astounding these brilliant folks waste their time posting on a conspiracy board, when they could be changing the face of mankind. : D

If the earth is fully illuminated then why can we see shadows on the moon surface?

For the same reason we see shadows on Earth during daytime?

ETA - does this help you to picture it more easily?

Because the spacecraft was getting close to the terminator line.

I drew this rough picture to help people understand where the spacecraft was, and where it was looking, in order to see both the full Earth and the shadows on the Moon:

To add to the answers above, the Earth''s phases mirror the moon''s. When the earth is full the moon is 'new', ie it is fully lit on the far side.

No because on those images the sun wasn't from directly behind.

IN your pics the sun is coming in from the left.

ive looked at it again (sober) and it could be possible to get this image if the picture was cropped at the top.

Actually, the original WAC image was heavily cropped at the bottom.

www.youtube.com...

I assume the NAC image was cropped at the bottom too.

Unrealistic photo as is doesn't iclude the true pic of our planet.

Space is full of crap. In fact, there's around 500,000 bits of debris orbiting Earth at approximately 17,500mph.

WTF - just WTF ?????????????????????

just how many of those 500k peices of space debris do you think should be visible in a true pucture of the earth where its equitorial diameter is 470 pixels ?

hint - the graphic you cite is the unrealistic one - as it shows all debris as visible - despite the fact that most is < 1m long

the earth is 12000km wide [ equitrorial diameter ] - do you really expect to se objets smaller than 1m ????????????????????

fooking unbeleivable
