Oh another one that I remembered when I read the bewunderer der hunde´s post. This never worked for me but here it is: Try to sip around seven small sips of water while holding your breath.

The fun stops when you have it for hours :-/
It´s like sneezing, I seldom sneeze, but when I do, I do it excessively.

For me, swallowing a tablespoonful of white vinegar works on the first try, every time. I think it's a tablespoonful, might be a little more. I take a slug right from the bottle. The spoon of sugar, if swallowed fast enough can work, but it often just just gets halfway stuck in your throat and halfway melts.

Yep!

Vinegar. Sometimes I just have to smell it to get rid of them.

Seriously I never heard or saw a person get a hickup from alcohol usage, all my life.
The only place where I can remember hearing/seeing this is in Disney Comics.
Is that even a real thing? Hickup from alcohol usage??

I get the hiccups when I drink sometimes! It's real.

Might sound disgusting, and definitely unhealthy, but the only thing that works in our house is a spoonful of sugar. * Cue Mary Poppins.

This is the only solution for me too. I mix a spoon of sugar in a glass of water and drink it, results are immediate.

But aren´t you not supposed to swallow it grainy? At least that´s what I heard and also read out of AccessDenieds post. Of course if it helps, it helps! Placebo-Effect? ^^

I´m not doubting it. But seriously, we use every excuse to throw a Fest/Party. So I´ve been around some ;-)
I cannot remember one situation. I mean someone hiccuping.
This could either mean
a) my memory works like a teafilter but I doubt it.
b) the parties were REAL good
c) or it has something to do with the alcohol or type of alcoholic beverage you ingest (beer != corn)

...you never learn out...

I've found a good shock will cure hiccups.

My friend refused to believe me but, every time he had hiccups, I'd sneak up behind him and shout 'Boo'. I'd get moaned at but took great delight, a few minutes later, in asking him where his hiccups had gone

I think breathing into a brown paper bag is supposed to work, but I've never tried it.

Drink a glass of water from the opposite side you would normally...

this requires bending over forward which compresses your diaphragm...

works every time

I have no idea how it works but sugar water stops them for me after the very first gulp. I was taught this one day by a woman I worked for when I couldn't stop hiccupping she is in her late sixties and said her mother taught her this method.
So, maybe it's been around awhile.
I could never swallow grainy sugar because I have a fear of choking ever since an herbal supplement got caught in my throat. I think sugar water is safer.
But aren´t you not supposed to swallow it grainy? At least that´s what I heard and also read out of AccessDenieds post. Of course if it helps, it helps! Placebo-Effect? ^^
sorry I got this quote thing all backwards
edit on 27-10-2015 by peppycat because: messed up quotation

The remedy I was taught was to take a deep breath, hold it and swallow three times before you stop holding your breath.

First one is easy, second one is moderately difficult, last one is HARD.

Usually works.

@ketsuko
a little trick from a diver, use your yaw (lock it) and then slightly rotate your yaw. You will feel the muscle behind your ears moving and maybe hear a click in your ears. If you do, your ears just pressurized. Same as when you clamp your nose and blow into it but the upper method is handsfree and can be done on the fly, without popping blood vessels in your eye or any forced pressure at all.

But thats not the point, the point is, this muscle helps you to loosen the throat when your brain blocks it. Allowing you to swallow much easier. There was a name for all that but it´s been awhile. It also helps you to hold breath much longer

Just some little sideline but can be of use. If you ever have to flee from a submarine or something ^^

So since i was the first to reply did you try my peanut butter method?

I know it sounds like BS but it works brilliantly.

Take an anti-acid, like Tums. I always keep a few in my purse, in case I get the hiccups while in a movie theater, restaurant, on a plane, etc. Easier than transporting vinegar or peanut butter, and it only takes one. Works every time.

Drink water upside. Take a mouthful standing up, tilt down to where your head is to your knees, and swallow. Works every time.

This is my sure fire method. Has never failed me. However nowadays I take a sip of water and hold it in my mouth first. It is the swallowing while bending over that works. It doesn't help for dirty minds though.

Yes, it is.
It can be a terrible thing, no air...
But the sugar method, eaten dry, is a guaranteed fix!
Yeah, the comix got it from life! *__-

Eating cold spätzle (thick swabian noodles) sometimes does that for me.
