Hi, for a long time, when i got hiccups, the holding breath for 30 seconds and tricking the brain you are drowning ie going into survival mode, that would stop the hiccups.

After years of doing that, it doesnt work for me.
Its as if the brain is saying oh no, not falling for that again

I did get a bizare solution at my doctos a few months back which worked
Basically hold a spoon or knife upside down in a cup of water and drink it

Dont ask, but it worked, and id had severe hiccups all day.

So what are you suggestions for hiccups?

I just have hiccups right now, and the problem is i really despise water.
The water in the UK is really flat and not very tasty.

A spoonful of peanut butter. Don't chase it with any drink.

Works every time for me.

Try to breath through your nose and say this 3 times without taking breath and break:

hegger,
begger,
spreng überd egger,
spreng übers looch,
ond spreng de alde weiber nooch.

(hickup hickup, jump over the fields, jump over the hole and run for the old ladys)

and you should be fine. It´s crucial you say it in a rhymin way and look up into the sky while doing it. I´m not kidding you, it has smth. to do with the zwerchfell. It works

"Zwerchfell"=Diaphragm.

You may be confusing people who speak no Deutsch.😃

Isn't that rhyme in plattdüütsch as well?Where did you dig that out?

Hold a massive breath, deep down. Bend over, with your arms pushing in on your diaphragm as hard as you can. Hold for 15 seconds.

Always works as stops the diaphragm spasming.

Yeah I was too lazy to translate it ;-)
It´s a swabian saying, south germany xD
My grandmother used to say this when I was hickuping all over the place.

you pruss/preuss/breiß!

edit: I was about to write "dwarf-fur" but you know... ;-)

Might sound disgusting, and definitely unhealthy, but the only thing that works in our house is a spoonful of sugar. * Cue Mary Poppins.

I heard that with vinegear. Even tried but it did not work. It was said to slurp a teaspoon of vinegear while being overhead will relax the diaphragma. Did not work for me. I guess I was pranked. But my method above, really works (for me).

Thanks for the upside down spoon or knife method, I got a good case of rolling my eyes from that suggestion.
I've never come across anyone who has ever said they despise water as a beverage. I assume you don't drink any water often. That in itself is very unhealthy.
You should consider buying a water purifier and learning to drink a lot of water every day.

It's clear that I am not a doctor, but I would definetely submit that you may want to consider changing doctors

Yeah, as has been mentioned, a dry eaten teaspoon-full of sugar is the cure for the worst of the alcoholic hiccups!
It should make short work of yours!

Seriously I never heard or saw a person get a hickup from alcohol usage, all my life.
The only place where I can remember hearing/seeing this is in Disney Comics.
Is that even a real thing? Hickup from alcohol usage??

Maybe it was a (then) socially acceptable way of portraying burping (belching, ructus, or eructation)?

Another way of stopping hiccups was to hold a good lungful of air whilst downing a glass of water... (drowning reflex again maybe?)

It can be accompanied with eventual vomiting. lol.

For me, swallowing a tablespoonful of white vinegar works on the first try, every time. I think it's a tablespoonful, might be a little more. I take a slug right from the bottle. The spoon of sugar, if swallowed fast enough can work, but it often just just gets halfway stuck in your throat and halfway melts.

I don't quite get the spoon/knife upside down thing, but here is my solution that almost works. My housemates always make ridicule of me while doing this, but hey, at least I get rid of hiccups easily.

Method:

-fill a glass of water/any other liquid
-then 'bend over' the glass with your head and hold your upper lip to the 'far side' of the glass
-sip liquid

You will most likely spill some water if you haven't practiced, but it's worth it. It's basically drinking from the other end of the glass while standing, forcing water via the roof of your mouth.

Oh and don't do it with that gross UK water. Man, I can't drink it for the life of me. It's not even that it's flat, it's because the UK seems to add something to the water that Holland doesn't (which is where I'm from).

EDIT: yeah you can indeed get hiccups from alcohol intake. Some persons are more susceptible for it than others though.

This works for me every time.

It's best to use a straw and take little sips and swallow each one while rubbing your temples.
You can also drink out of a glass, taking a mouthful, but only swallowing a little at a time, while massaging your temples.
You may have to move your fingers around to get the right spot on your temples. But rub slowly and calmly. It usually takes about 10 seconds to stop them.

Perhaps you should just change the way you think of hiccups.

They are all little surprises! Enjoy them! They can be fun!

I had a child once, almost at the tear stage until I told him to enjoy them instead of getting worried. Worked really well. Next time I saw him, he asked if I knew a way of starting hiccups. Lol

Hiccups are very underrated as a source of amusement and pleasure.

Sneezing is similar but is out of fashion now.

im not a doctor but i watched a documentary on guy that hiccups alot. Eventually after years they discovered he had a brain tumour making him hiccup all the time. it was the position it was sitting at on his brain.

depending how frequent your hiccups are i would look at the route cause rather than a quick fix

at the same time i don't mean to scare you or go straight to the worst case scenario. I just dont know much apart from that documentary, so thought i would share it.

made try chewing your food more before you swallow. about 20 chews per mouth full.
