Whatever is happening the SETI facebook page has been getting updates about it. One updates details what would happen if it is an advanced ET

What if the dimming they are seeing in the star is some purposeful form of contact and not a Dyson swarm? Nothing travels faster than light and it is a way for some extraterrestrial civilization to say "hey we are here" not just to us but to anyone that is searching. Just a crazy thought I had while reading the smoke signal comment from the first few pages of the thread.

Using a star as the light to send morse code over vast distances! I like it.

Also, if our World concentrated on this rather than Empires, slavery, power, money and greed, perhaps united, we too would be more advanced.

You know gents, I've been current with ATS for over 8 years now. With a couple different accounts here and there, I just used to lose their passwords after time or something. This topic has made me decide to formally rejoin this community.

Personally, I support the theory that the government could be using this as a means to give a controlled release, or disclosure, to the public. A means of saying as another user said, "Hey, there's aliens out there. But they're too far away to really be concerned with them right now." This way, everyone becomes more and more conditioned over time through pop-culture and other sources. The rationals can battle it out with the religions without any real pressure of impending alien *public* first contact. (Even if we've already made contact in the past in secret)

(working off the ideas above this post)

Wonder if any of them thought to take the light signal data (the wave pattern) and 'play'' it.. slow it down, speed it up or look for some data in it? Putting something in front of a star, and using a device to pop off 1's and 0's per frequency wave level COULD work, just would be a monumental endeavor.

Maybe the 'signal is in the light pattern, and not in a 'radio (lol) signal'. I highly doubt they would be using radio signals.
20 days or so of the light signal data... some sound engineers should look into it.. could it be done? I think it would be the universal way to contact anyone within a few thousand light years!

Edit: Remember those music boxes that had the brass wheel with pins? Take that, instead of pins, they are holes the sun shines through. Heck, the 'holes' may open and close for the data, since the light would be a constant..

I am glad you started with the words 'It is my belief'. That is your domain solely. I would think Vatican, as a representative of the christian faith, when acknowledging the possibility of life on other planets, would be a step forward. But unfortunately not. I really hope you realise, your understanding of God is just one amongst many.

But then the target planet must be in the line of sight. Otherwise they have to build a sphere around their sun with gaps in it to give the dimming effect. Its easier to broadcast radiowaves themselves to attract attention if they wanted it.

I'm in no way saying this theory is correct, more of a cool passing thought when I said it but what if it was something that would change direction much like the radio telescopes at seti do. They don't constantly point in one direction at the sky, they check sectors of the sky. What if they beam the signal for a while in our direction and then move on and beam to a different sector. As for the "how" they would achieve it I wouldn't know, if they are 10,000 years more advanced it would be like a caveman trying to explain how a smartphone works. Using light would be the fastest way of communication.

That star is like 100 light years away. So any radio signal we het from there will be thousands of years old.Or older. If they are like us they probably killed each other already.

I don't know why, but I get this strange feeling that we are going to discover we are not alone in the Universe, thanks in large part to SETI and my new best friend - KIC 8462852.

Cheers for the very exciting update, even if it turns out to be a false alarm, it still has me totally intrigued because IF an announcement is made verifying intelligence of some description has been detected then the history books will record this moment in time as a monumental turning point in the quest we have all been on.

Super-excited.

Truely exciting situation. When scientists start talking, then you know it has substance!

If it turns out to be aliens, worst part is that they are 10,000s of years more advanced than us! Not really comforting. Their technology would be like magic compared to even our blackest of black military technology. We will be like ants to them.

I hope they have compassion.

What makes you think they are so many more years advanced than us? We technically have the tech to do this our selfs just not on this scale. Yes our solar energy is not incredibly efficient but in 100 years i can totally see it being used to power the earth. The moon landing was like 46 year ago and the amount of computing power used to make that happen was nothing compared to whats in your modern smart watch today. I would say they are probably closer to about 2000 years more advanced than us. You are right though their tech would seem like magic to us. Its just a interesting topic not trying to come at you

Who9 knows what we could accomplish here if we set aside our petty differences and worked together to advance humanity instead of countries spending themselves into debt so they can feel superior to other countries.

For all we know this civilization is at the same level we are just more advanced when it comes to working together.

YES. It may be new kind of smoke signal.
Quite clever one, if you ask me.
Anyway - imagine progress, that such civilisation made in 1.5k yrs since then...

Just a thought I had reading this in regards to looking for signals in the light. Is it possible that rather than being the home solar system to a civilisation, maybe a civilisation has surrounded a system of some importance in some kind of structure to turn the star into some kind of galactic navigation beacon? Maybe bringing to attention something of importance or even as a warning to steer clear of something dangerous for any space faring beings. Kind of like a galactic "lighthouse".

To be honest, I think this has been known for a long while. We've spent how many decades in space and looking at the planets, and nothing. Then suddenly, in the space of a blink of an eye, we have running water and the chance to live on Mars, and they find a half a dozen habitable planets. Now, when we find we can live on other planets...we suddenly receive a message. It's all coming to fast and all too together. All the info we have has been known for years but they've chosen now to release it, is my personal thought.

It's probably a message from the inter-planetery estate agents association telling us not to move as when we go to Mars the house prices on every other planet in the solar system will drop.

I can hear them on pluto now shouting "There goes the neighbourhood !!" .."Zavog, pack your things and get the kids...we're going to Alpha Centuri..these humans are trash.."

Not that crazy... just as sensible of a theory as a Dyson sphere.

Could you imagine the power harnessed from such a device? The task of building it would be nearly impossible though. At our current level of technology.

I wonder - maybe that whole construction(its power, specifically) is used to warp their probes?
Insane idea - compressing the power gained...we still have problem with that, notice this.
But imagine scale of power collected with tech like this...
Sorry for my english.

In response to compressing that power, could you imagine how they would look at us? Our only real action where we attempt to compress power in every day life is electrical transformers, where we step up or down the voltage of a current. This would look like cave men discovering fire to them. (If that were the case)

Very strange facts about this star. I believe that something very strange is going on out there.
