A warning would be nice, provided there was some efficient organised means to contact and evacuate several million people in the very short time available. That means regular practices and drills for something that has a very low probability of actually ever happening.

Suppose by some fluke, you knew right this very moment that a nuclear device was going to explode in New York in exactly twenty one minutes time. What would you do. Seriously, what could you personally do about it ???

The Police would laugh at you, The Mayor would be in a meeting, the News media would think you were a complete psycho, what COULD you actually do. That is the problem.

Try getting 100 people out of the water on a crowded beach one summers day. If someone does not punch you out first, the cops would cart you away for disturbing the peace.

It is easy to blame people after the event, it always is. But the reality probably is, that nothing was actually possible in the short space of time available.

Yes, and they infact should disregard you if you are just telling them a story, but thats why there are entire systems of people that are there tomonitor these things. On the beaches in that part of the world, there are tsunami warning sirens, and thousands of people could've gotten away, or even gotten into tall buildings. As far as NYC being evacuated, well, a nuke won't vaporize the entire city, so people could get off the streets in 24 minutes and get into cellars, closed parking garages, or even start their back up generators (at least businesses could do that). But obviously the city itself can't be evacuated, you are right about that.

I suspect a tsunami warnign siren will motivate them.

There definitely should've been a tsunami monitoring system in place, and in the time available, a max of what, 2.5 hours for the thais and indians, thousands could've gotten away. I saw one idiot who decided to video tape the approaching wave from his high rise balcony. He was in a hotel at a resort right on the beach. Everyone and everything below him was hit, and it really looked like he wasing going to be, but he wasn't. And that was right on the beach. If the sirens went off, people could've ran to high ground and high rises in time. Not everyone of course, but a warning certainly would've been worth the expense of the system.

The thing is that when 9/11 happenned all americans cries because 3000 americans were death!! Oh it was serious!! 3000 deaths the most serious disaster in the world!! It's like if you were saying that 3000 americans were more important than 200 000 other people in the world.

And i hate things like that: Every human is equal... a rich american isn't worth 200 ``other nation people`` and you're president isn't worth 1/100 anyone in this world.

So those people who say that 9/11 is the most important tragedy those is just stupid.

That's it.

This thing is going to go over a million deaths by the time all is said and done. And that isn't even factoring in death by disease in the coming months. :/

- Who here said that Americans lives are worth more then others?

and 9/11 was seroius, in a different way though. This was serious because of the amount of people dead and the amount of destruction. While 9/11 was serious because its was a largest amount of lives and desruction that terrorist have ever done in a single attack.
