Deaths could not be prevented given the fury of the water unfortunately. Fewer deaths however would have been the result if people learned to understand the signals that were given. Animals who know how to use their senses left. Elephants in Thailand were trumpeting in an effort to get humans to respond. Most didnt, so the elephants headed for higher ground to save themselves. Birds went quiet once again this is a signal that something is about to happen. Take the time to observe what happens around your own area and you will see that animals and birds know before we do and they try to warn us.
When the tide went out quickly to start with if people were more aware they would have realised that a tidal wave would come back. Most dont know what the signals are so they didnt respond. In fact many of the children ran out onto the flat to collect shells. They had no hope. Also
many people just stood and watched the waves coming in. They didnt react quickly enough.
Lady, Your words here are exactly what I have thought, as well as what I have mention on other treads to a short extent.
We All need to look a little deeper, allot more closer in every aspect of this thinking
There was an increase in UFO activity around the Indian Ocean basin just before the earthquake. This is not uncommon before a major natural disaster. Once again, we are not tuned into the world around us, so we dont pick up the signals. There also appears to have been either an asteroids hit or close encounter on December 26. I bet this had an impact but not one that in fairness people would probably have been in a position to be accurate about.
Lastly, many of the beach areas are built on reclaimed sand. They are only centimetres above the tide line with the force of the water some of the island just washed away. There are lessons in this for the future of rebuilding.

I think the numbers can and will be inflated to get MONEY from a symapathy scam. The higher the death toll the greater the world sympathy. Like "body count" in Vietnam. High numbers have political capital and literally more money in the pockets of governments that traditionally care little for the masses of their people.

And ultimately, there isn't any time to do anything about this anyways. 2 and a half hours after the earthquake, the tidal wave hit ceylon and india. Long before that it hit indonesia and the other parts of the world that were affected. You simply can't evacuate enough of that part of the world to prevent massive deaths.
