It is a serious problem, though websites should be banning/suspending speech against their TOS- I know YouTube seems to be too big to police comments very well. Places like YouTube should step up. Shutting down websites is not the answer.

Lying about them...that is not a serious problem. Death threats and other threats of violence are. It does happen to females in gaming a lot.

It is more in the larger games. I play a smaller online game where that is almost non existent, but this thread brought to mind something that happened a couple of days ago. The server that I play on just merged with others, so there is a lot of adding of new friends and brief conversations with new people. A male player from one of the new servers, after several lines of general chit chat typed "Would you like to see a video of myself and my wife *CENSORED*". I blacklisted him, I contacted the leader of his guild who kicked him out. I sent a screen shot to the game- surprise, surprise, he is neither banned or suspended- yet.

The feeling was almost as if he was standing in front of me and said that. I was shocked and upset and shaking a little.

I hear this happens more often in larger games and there is some percent of male players who harass female gamers just because they are female.

I don't want to see any websites shut down, but this may bring some much needed attention to the issue.

1) gonna guess console experience? thats where most sexism abuse comes in (unironically anyhow. PC gamers tend to be older, therefore mature and only use sexist comments as simple humor to parody the nonsense of sexism). There are of course exceptions. MMOs..especially the free to play ones, tend to attract kids/teens using mom and dads computer.

2) death threats and stuff are actually more common for men, men just are accustom to it and give the virtual finger to those people and dismiss it without even considering it. I personally have a 50/50 split of women to men game friends on my steam I play with and have not seen any sexism or violent threats at them...not saying it doesn't happen, but I have experienced more personally than they have. pure subjective experience. all online poopslinging sucks and I am a huge fan of mute buttons in games for a simple defense against arsehats

3) harassing is now a subjective term being pushed more broadly by the day from people who perhaps are a bit oversensetive to criticism. "you suck at this game" is not grounds to enact sweeping policys to protect such raw criticism..instead, just tell that person to blow you...its a time honored tradition..and then mute em for being a jerk
when in rome...

4) screenshots can be manipulated. I can in 2 minutes on photoshop make someone look like the antichrist. its a tricky situation that requires individual investigation verses sweeping rules that will most definately be abused.

If she/they have such a problem maybe, just maybe they should take a break from the internet and go do something else for a while..

Sometimes stepping away from a problem helps to let it settle down a bit..

I always find it sad when I hear people say things like...

"The internet is picking on me, make it stop"

I guess I will use my crass imagination as to what *Censored* meant and I think I have a fair grasp at what you meant.

Freedom of speech, does not apply to T&C of websites. However, and as a person who I have had disagreements in political ideologies in the past, I am seeing something much more disturbing!

I am seeing people wanting things banned just because this site or this business owner said, something that a certain segment of society found offensive!

How does that line up with the freedom of speech? I don't have an issue if a business owner gets flack for what they said or believe in, but it has gone BEYOND THAT! It is a new age of McCarthyism where people lose their job or lose their way of lively hood just because they pissed off a "special" group of social justice warriors!

Let me give you a personal example. I despise Progressives! Why? Because they act like fascists! But as much I feel the way I do about that, I would be pissed to see for example, ThinkProgress.com be taken down by the government because their views were deemed a threat or offensive. Just as I have seen those who think it would be cool for Alex Jones to be arrested and taken down, IT IS WRONG to stop the freedom of speech of anyone, unless they are violating the law and promoting violence!

We are all special in our own twisted ways, but when we ALLOW speech that we deem as offensive to be outlawed, WHO IS NEXT?

The truth is that she/they ( Sarkeesian and company ) make a lot of money doing what they do. Sarkeesian, just on her own, can literally cause Twitter to trend when she creates a new hashtag. She has a highly profitable Youtube channel, she does countless paid speaking engagements, and she has a Patreon account that can blossom into the tens of thousands in donations whenever she plays the victim card.

She is getting extremely rich off of her hyperbole.

The others are basically copycats of her model

As a gamer I find the implication that games are turning young men violent utterly ridiculous. First off ultra-violent games are age restricted making these complaints utterly meaningless. Don't want your kid playing Grand Theft Auto, don't cave into their whining and actually stand their ground then.

While I do find cyber-bullying repulsive and generally consider myself a left-leaning and feminist-leaning person this whole super-radical feminazi internet brigade is almost as repulsive as the jerks on the other side who send Anita and women like her death-threats, rape-threats, etc.

On the one hand I can understand coming before governments and saying "I shouldn't be receiving death threats and rape threats, something needs to be done to protect people" but from the quotes in your OP it almost sounds like she's just talking about any and all detractors who happen to trash talk her. Should death threats and rape threats online be prosecutable (is that a word) harassment? ABSOLUTELY. But that doesn't mean you can silence your critics from general trash talking as long as that trash talking doesn't cross the line into actual threats or something so bad it really might drive someone to suicide.

And the worst part is that in this great big debate between radical feminists and their social justice warrior brethren vs. MRAs and offended gamers I can't see myself taking any sides any time soon. I just don't care honestly and as a gamer it feels like I can't avoid this nonsense.

The internet endless outrage machine is a worthless distraction in my opinion, it's not even enjoyable or funny to watch when you have no dog in the fight (uh oh, no dog in the fight, that's not PC). And all of the radical feminism, radical progressivism makes it hard for me, someone who would like to consider themselves a feminist but can't because so many of them are psychos who can't make up their mind over whether the same subject is empowering to women or oppressing them. And with Progressivism it's the religious apology brigade who adhere to cultural relativism that bother me, I'm sorry but if a country has a majority of people supporting Sharia Law and wishing they could bring back female circumcision they are backaswards plain and simple.

That's where you have fun with it. Say something like sure, but I get your wife when I'm done, you help her pack. And pay all expenses while we party. Words only have shock value when you let them. I promise the clan leader told him, they are laughing about it.

You could of said sure, not watched then made a comment like I'll take your wife but you should invest in some extendz tablets. People are dumb like that, make fun of them. They will stop.

IF we are going to be free we must understand that from time to time we will be offended and even confronted for what we say and do. None of the people on ATS would even be here if they didn't realize this fact because lets face it...we can be hard on each other when we have an honest disagreement.

Perhaps we can use this particular stupidity to again find common ground here on ATS. Most of you know that I am against nearly anything that stifles individual liberty, freedom and creativity. These 'people' are the antithesis of everything I believe and stand for here on ATS and in my life.

Left and Right lately are starting to part between authoritarian and libertarian..which I think is a more accurate parting to be honest. individualism vs collectivism

That is an outstanding analysis of the current state of affairs. You are right. Just as the OP states he feels no connection with the Progressive movement.

My political philosophy is focused on minimizing intrusions by Government and to a lesser extent society into the lives of me and my family. Sometimes it puts be at odds with Republicans and sometimes with Democrats, but ALWAYS with Authoritarians.

Anita Sarkeesian net worth: Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American media critic, blogger, and feminist who has a net worth of $300 thousand.

a promise of 12 videos 2 years ago she failed to deliver even half on netted her that, not to mention endless speaking gigs.

is she stupid?
...define stupidity. I see a very clever game going on here personally.

I agree, some of this stuff is getting way out of hand.

These people take away from any true movement just looking for equality not to make others walk on egg shells.

I want equal treatment, not equality, not in the sense that is pushed.

I look at it in the gaming perspective.

Equal treatment is when I set down and we roll the dice and the 6-sider says what it says and the rules say what they say. Someone wins, someone loses, and a lot of folks are in between. Yay!

Equal outcome is when I sit down and no matter what the 6-sider says or the rules say, nothing is set in stone and everything arbitrarily changes because the only goal that matters is that everyone reaches the same ending point at the same time. And is you've ever played any game with lots of rules that seeks balance, you know that NEVER happens. Some get nerfed and others get buffed, and the unintended results are that others that were never intended to profit do so and wind up breaking the new system. Until the next round of changes.

exact quote is people calling her a liar
I want you to spend a minute and consider how lets say the politicians may use her words to further their own agenda if you dont accept her words at face value

What's she is referring to is #gamergate and it went far beyond "people calling her a liar." I can't tell if you're simply ignorant of the facts or if you're an actual supporter/promoter because you sound as though you might be.

To give everyone else an idea, what we're talking about by harassment here is accounts being hacked (social media, email, file hosting), blogs/webpages hacked (and all that goes along with that like private emails and images being uploaded to dumps), being doxed, having bomb threats called in at speaking engagements, threats of mass shootings, daily death and rape threats by phone, email, etc, things being sent to their houses (including depictions of them being raped), even the creation of the game Beat Up Anita Sarkeesian and multiple SWATting attempts.

If you think that's the same as simply being disagreed with or called a liar, then I invite you to go invite the attention of the wrong people and get doxed. I guarantee you could be driven to depression and desperate measures in short order.

So really, ask yourself how ridiculously disingenuous was this statement?

when someone is suggesting speech is now violence...what is my natural reaction and outcome?

As for this:

I expect...no, I demand my fellow liberals to stand up and say enough is enough, to push off this "pro"gressive leech trying to steer classic liberal ideals of freedom and expression off the road. this is disgusting and progressives are -not- friends to liberals..they are the polar opposite.

Who are you to demand anything? I'm not going to waste a lot of time with your Classical Liberalism vs Progressivism rant; it's pretty clear that you believe you've gained some unique insight but no, it's pretty standard rhetoric. To me it seems like maybe you were searching for an ideology to attach yourself to so you could give yourself a label and start reciting dogmatic rhetoric. Now you think you're an adept and you're issuing demands!

Here's some food for thought though. Liberalism is more a set of ideals whereas progressivism is a method or an approach. They're not "polar opposites" and in fact, a person can be both. For instance, I'm a pragmatist and I also believe in the equal enjoyment of the maximum amount of liberty for everyone. That's the problem with lazy binary thinking; nuance is significant.

People have been loudly opposing her since 2013, a year before GG was around.

Everything else you wrote is just promoting victim mentality while ignoring everything said in the ops. you have added nothing.

Address specific quotes. tell me why you agree harassment is now considered someone calling someone a liar online
tell me why the UN should take measures to end cyber violence of disagreements

as far as GG is concerned. I am a vegetarian, a vegetarian doesn't have to endorse hitler just because he also was a vegetarian. there are merits of vegetarianism. best not to use false equivalency

If someone has a sign proclaiming a belief or ideology, they have a right to display that sign, be it on the internet or on their property.

If someone disagrees with that message, then they have a right to make their own sign, be it virtual or real.

What they don't have a right to do, is destroy the other persons sign.

Not so stupid. She's become fairly wealthy in her own right creating her own self-perpetuating corner of the outrage and grievance industry. She's like the feminist gamer version of Sharpton or Jackson.

I am a gamer, never got the gamer gate thing.

Sure some games over sexualize girls and may not give them strong lead roles but hell all the guys are these crazy one man wrecking balls that save the world, and usually pretty damn jacked.

Talk about standards to live up to!

It's been a while since I really paid any attention to it. There was some implied collusion on the part of game developers and game press too. Everyone sleeping with everyone, investing in everyone's stuff, compromised objectivity ... games that turned out to be crappy as far as the players were concerned would all receive glowing press/reviews, especially if they covered the SJW bases ... things like that.

She was in the forefront because her complaints and the ugliness going on around it made it easy to dismiss the whole thing as just a bunch of mouth-breathing troglodyte basement dwellers who couldn't handle change.
