Well, Obama had a bit of a 'potentially historic' novelty to draw upon that Sanders lacks---even though Bernie's socialism might grab a few wannabe
history-makers, I doubt it will be enough.
In my opinion, Sanders is almost exactly like Trump in catching a lift in the polls due mainly to discontent and frustration over our broken system.
Ron Paul did close to the same thing a time or so and also flirted with poll momentum that eventually either fizzled or was simply denied.
The smart money in 2016 is STILL for a Bush/Clinton face off, as much as it pains me to say that. Clinton isn't finished(in fact, she hasn't even
really gotten started) in this race....as SHE should be the one to draw on that 'potentially historic' vibe this time around.
