Hmmm - Europe is such a confounding continent. Luxembourg has the highest per capita gdp in the world, but also has the highest per capita external debt, at 3443% of gdp (greece has 174% external debt gdp per capita, Spain 167% external debt gdp per capita... how does that make any sense?)

All of you need to realize that FIRSTLY: Politics is not a flat board. In reality it's more like a sphere, and if you go far enough RIGHT, you end up exactly the same place as the people who went the LEFT way round; and that place is known as TOTALITARIANISM.

And SECONDLY: RIGHT / LEFT varies IMMENSELY from country to country. In general many European conservative parties might be considered leftists here in the US. But then you have "leftist" parties in many countries around the world who embrace religion, or have religious titles in the party name. Or conservative parties in some countries who wouldn't dream of reducing socialist benefit systems.

So let the partisan BS talk go please.

This is an interesting board so I thought I'd chip in my two peseta / one cent's worth.

There is nothing new about la Ley Mordaza. Most of it was already in place, this new legislation just consolidates things.

Some, like the ID law, have been around forever. If you've ever been pulled over by a traffic cop in Spain, if you've ever tried to pay in a shop with a credit card, you'll know what I mean.

Some, like the insulting a police officer bit, are the same in every developed nation.

Some, like the law on demonstrations, have been under review for years. Central Madrid can have several demonstrations a day. When the government proposed tighter control of demos, the police objected because the right to protest is constitutionally guaranteed and the police are there to protect people's rights. There are specific times when political demonstrations are banned, eg immediately before a general election, but 2011 showed that nobody cared to enforce the ban.

Mariano Rajoy's government was elected as part of the left-right switcheroo reaction to the global economic crisis a few years back . Like most of those governments, it's failed to deliver. The local elections this year saw its worst election results in a generation and, with another general election due towards the end of this year, the PP is scared.

By reinventing the wheel and consolidating existing legislation, it's appealing to its traditional right wing, conservative base without necessarily alienating the newer, more socially liberal rightwingers. If it ever seriously attempts to implement this new law as a whole, it will get a bigger electoral smack in the mouth than it did in 2004.

The litmus test: are Spanish activists that bothered? Not really because nothing's changed.

Oh well EU cluster party! What ya know. Seriously bad stuff. So much for European project, oh I meant parts of Europe are becoming a project. The Spanish arnt any near as lazy as some of the Greeks, so what's really going on? What Brussels and Luxembourg really upto here? No doubt Germany is involved too. Also the far Eastern edge of Europe may return to mother Russia.

Definitely some shenanigans going on here!!

Suppose you consider Tsipras an incompetent twerp. Suppose you dearly want to see Syriza out of power. Suppose, even, that you welcome the prospect of pushing those annoying Greeks out of the euro.

Even if all of that is true, this Eurogroup list of demands is madness. The trending hashtag ThisIsACoup is exactly right. This goes beyond harsh into pure vindictiveness, complete destruction of national sovereignty, and no hope of relief. It is, presumably, meant to be an offer Greece can’t accept; but even so, it’s a grotesque betrayal of everything the European project was supposed to stand for.
