WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- U.S. Park Police and Metropolitan Police Department officers are responding to Navy Yard for a report of active shooter. No casualties at this time.

An employee inside Navy Yard reports that alarms are sounding and the buildings are on lockdown.

Reporter 3 blocks away seeing police, fire, and SWAT staging up outside the park.

DC police, transportation police, DC fire, and homeland security people all on scene at the moment.

that was one of my thoughts, but i didn't want to be the first one to say it.

Hope it's not another one of those "lone wolf" scenarios.

Just heard this on Fox and Friends. I guess the increased security at the Navy Yard didn't work too well.

It's also unverified as of right now, so we'll see when the dust starts settling and the facts get separated from the crap.

It will be necessary to wait for better, more comprehensive data on the specifics of the situation before commenting in anything other than a general manner, on the issue of mass shootings and similar incidents. What I would say at this point, is that it is far, FAR too early in proceedings to make any assumptions about motivations, and affiliations of whoever might be causing trouble. At this point, we do not even know if there is actually any genuine trouble in the offing, or whether something else is going on.

Open minds, and open eyes everyone!

I'm at the Marine Barracks across the street.

We got word and locked down about 30 minutes ago. No further details yet, but I'll post what I hear as it comes up.

Update at 0840 est.

They still aren't telling us anything other than hold what we got and keep our eyes peeled.

Let's get a requirement that each time the media mentions a shooting or an incident, they can only play commercials for Zoloft or Prozac/Zanax… Probably be the only truth in advertising….

NBC is reporting shots fired in a building prompted the response.

ETA - ABC now reporting a source says the report was based on a suspicious person.

Hope it turns out to be false alarm and maybe it was someone shooting off fireworks as its close to July 4th.

No way, Brit. I'm getting out in front of this and saying its a white guy who has a black ancestor that he's upset about, and a Latino uncle, and he also has ties to a local, very small sect of ultra devout Christian-Muslims, and he's also been diagnosed with a mental illness.
