As I said in my first comment: when his term is up, he's a tourist. And, after the first warning, a trespasser.

Progressives may weep and wail and gnash their teeth (we may even hear the lamentations of their women) but they're not going to keep him in office by force.

ETA - as far as a full blown coup? He doesn't have the capital to pull that off. He and his backers would get their asses handed to them in a hurry, in one way or another.

What if he PHYSICALLY refuses?
HOW far will progressive elements back him?
I didn't ask wether or not he would at all ,I want to know the process of stopping a coup.

No one would back him because he would be violating the Constitution.

I disagree. They wouldn't stand for it. That's some partisan junk there partner.

Look at it this way, you will still have freedom of choice. Bush or Clinton !

Both of whom will follow in Obama's footsteps to the letter.

Of course on the other hand, there are numerous possibilities for the President to declare a National Emergency and temporarily postpone the election. And the majority Democrats would allow it for a short time. For 1 or 2 years studies indicate before people would start to rise up.

Examples:

War with Russia
War with China
Economic collapse
Nuclear terrorists attack ( Dirty Bomb)
Preemptive strike on Iran by Israel ( Nuclear or EMP )
And a good many natural disasters that are too long to list.

Is going to be a long 17 months.

Yea I don't put sarcasm tags on to let everybody know I'm being sarcastic. I figured the Conan the Barbarian reference was a big enough clue.

OP posited that progressives may support it. Not me.

The real question is, why would anyone NOT want to step down after 8 years. The physical, emotional, and mental toll of being the President must be vast. Just look how much any President who holds office for 8 years ages in that short time frame. If I were Obama, I'd be counting down the days to step down. Then you get to retire to a cushy job on the public speaking circuit being paid millions so that people can hear you talk all the time.

You absolutely have that right. Even all the recent two termers come into office looking feisty and fresh, but they leave 8 years later looking 20 years older and deathly tired. Then look after a year or two of them leaving, they look well rested and very happy to not have the literal weight of the world on their shoulders.

Obama's not going to be any different. I bet, like you said, he's counting the days until he can leave and cash in like all his predecessors.

With all the steps over the line what would happen to a president who refuses to leave?
I don't really know what could happen.

I think he'd be removed by force and the next sworn president would move in.

I still think the machinations and protocols of our government work smoothly and would keep on working just as they have the last few decades.

There's not enough strife and chaos and pain for any kind of take over or revolution to work right now.

If there is a takeover, it's already happened and nobody can see it except for a few of us on ATS who know that it's already happened.

The populace WOULD notice if Obama didn't step down, but if he's replaced by Hillary or Bush, they won't notice.

What's the only difference between Hillary and Bush? A few small details like visible Climate change action, EPA stuff and LGBT rights.

Why would you even entertain the consideration? It's not going to happen with Obama or any other president. I mean, are you just picking on Obama or do you genuinely want to know what would happen?

I'm only asking because it's so far out of the realm of possibility that it's probably never been considered. No one would stand for it and after being asked nicely to leave he'd probably just be escorted off the premises.

If he wasn't stepping down you would know it because he would have to run along side of the rest of the candidates, which is unconstitutional and impossible anyway. He cannot just stay, lol.

Maybe he can go see Jenner and get a transgender operation, change his name, and beat the system.

IDK man. Hillary has more balls than most men. Some might say that she's Bill's balls and she already has 8 years in the WH.

If Obama refuses to step down, then he will become Emperor and Michelle will be Emperess.

He will change his name to Ming The Merciless.

Some child will say that he has no clothes, so as a result. . . he will kill all children under the age of 8. Will destroy the Constitution and Bill of Rights, have Congress all shot (. . . meh, nevermind), he will change all currency to have his picture on it and statues will be built from gold in his honor and many people will praise his bravery and rejoice!

It HAS happened in the past. The last time during WW2. A transition of gov't at that time may have hindered the war effort.... for the world. Unlikely but possible.

I'll reply to the adult parts of your posts.

The 22nd amendment was submitted in 1947 and ratified in 1951.
Your history is way off.
Roosevelt and WWII were long gone by then.
It has NOT happened.

In order to understand the process and system involved with that action.
