I stumbled upon this young mans video about a 40w homemade laser 'shotgun' he made. I wish I had the technology background to make fun toys like this. I wanted to share this with ATS simply because it looks like fun to play make and find things to destroy.

Who doesn't like to find things to blow up?!?

Who doesn't like to find things to blow up?!?

hmmmm kind of an odd thing to say given the current climate and terrorism etc. All fun and games I suppose till you take it too far........I wonder if that is a thought that went through Timothy Mcveighs mind before he became an extremist terrorist. Interesting.

Well if this goes viral then soon areal drones are sitting duck up there. .
It's cool but I hope illegal , someone could really get crazy ideas and shoot someone constantly I can imagine you hardly escape such a weapon if you can control that beam

in the mid 80's Chris Knight developed a laser that kicked off one megajoule per liter which, apparently, is hotter than the sun.

"You ARE Chris Night, right?"
"I hope so, im wearing his underwear"

"Its coherent light.."
"Oh, so it can talk?"

Some how, the amount of fire on the objects and the speed they lite up at does not seem like 40Watts. The beam looks nice and all, but if you want a REAL laser gun, you need a large laser array and a Nd:yag rod. To make one you focus 500+ watts of 808nm IR beam from an array into the side of a Nd:yag rod and a SINGLE beam comes out the end of the rod.

Also, 40 watts is not that powerful if you wanted to burn a hole through some one. Yeah you could set hair on fire and instantly blind, maybe a bit of a first degree burn but that is it (they would move to get away from the pain). You can wave a blowtorch across your hand and not much happens and that is well over 40 watts. Worst case, third degree burns, no holes though.

----

May i suggest using an old industrial XRAY machine used to inspect really thick concrete.
They were in the 100 watt range which could be modified to allow long term pulsing used to prime another emmissive device to get that 100 watts of Xray power concentrated down to the infrared or even millimetre wavelengths for some serious burning power.

Just a suggestion for some serious tinkerers!

It leaves me to wonder, if a someone who isn't a scientist can create this simple gadget how far ahead are our scientists, I mean we can make conductors the size of molecules now the future of this world seems to be a scary one.
