The National Security Agency's authority to collect troves of bulk telephone metadata under the post-Sept. 11 USA Patriot Act will expire at midnight after Republican senators were unable to make a deal Sunday.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell sought a two-week extension of two less controversial provisions of the Patriot Act, but that effort was blocked by Sen. Rand Paul, his fellow Kentucky Republican who is running for president partly on his strong objections to the surveillance programs.
The provisions of the Patriot Act that are expiring are what's known as Section 215, which authorizes the NSA's bulk collection of telephone metadata; a provision giving intelligence agencies powers to follow terrorists who may not be affiliated with a terrorist group; and roving wiretaps, which give intelligence agencies the ability to monitor someone who may use a number of different telephone lines to evade detection.

If it passes we need to elect Rand Paul POTUS. He has Vowed to sign a Executive Order on his first day in office to end the NSA surveillance .

Well, Rand did it. I have to say, now I don't know what party I want to register with for a primary vote. Getting Sanders or Paul into the general election.
