The origional article is old, but the society exists today. It is difficult to imagine what some people still believe.

This is a long article, but worth the read for entertainment value.

I guess they do put up a good argument but it all seems to be from the imagination of a 3 year old. Does anyone here on ATS believe that the Earth is flat still? It would be really interesting to hear other peoples views on this.

Hilarious.

Anyone who has been in a plane can surely see very clearly for themselves the earth's curvature.

LOL, this isnt the worse thing people still believe, one of the more funny, but not the most stupid.

Couldn't be bothered to read all the article, but got the idea of it.

His ideas I believe come from the Bible or Testaments, which apparently refer to the World as being flat.

Another good reason to throw it out.

Do you mean to tell me that none of you have heard of the Flat Earth Society before?

I don't think that this is meant to be taken seriously.

Their findings and use of scriptural context is mistaken.
Seems they didn't read or wish to acknowledge this?
Who invented the flat earth?

Christianity has often been accused of opposing science and hindering technology throughout history by superstitious ignorance. However, a closer study of historical facts shows that this accusation is ill-founded.

The bible talks about the sun being stopped in its path, which at least indicates that it was thought to move around the earth, but some apologists will insist that this means the exact oppposite. Similarly, in the bible, the sky and the heavens are said to be valuted above the earth and held up like that. This isn't something that one would even think of if one knew that the earth were round. Also, the NT notes that jesus was taken to a high place and shown every where on earth. This is not possible on a round earth. And also, there is often an issue made of a translation of a hebrew word for the earth, apparently its lug or something like that. The claim is that it means 'ball', ie the earth is a ball. However apparentlly the word is better translated as 'circle', which does not mean 'spherical'. And that word is also only used elsewhere in the bible as meaning circle, like a wheel, not a round ball of something.

The Flat Earth Society is an actual group of people that think that the earth is round. They're not a parody, I think they are based in australia, which is ironic. They take offense at being said to be walking upside down.

More bizzare is the idea that the earth is something like a concave sheet, not a ball at all. Apparently this idea can be argued with impeccible mathematical logic, and was formulated in such a way that it purposely can't be refuted.

Flat-Earth Society FAQ
19. What is the "Springfield Effect"?
The Springfield Effect is the name given to the phenomenon by which every place named Springfield is hard-linked in hyperspace to every other place of this name. In other words, there is only one place named Springfield, but it is "linked" to various locations in the world.
20. Does Idaho exist?
No. The existence of Idaho is a lie, fabricated by a conspiracy of cartographers, as is England (see question 10).
21. What about North Dakota?
That doesn't exist either.
22. Any other places which are believed to exist but really don't?
Yes, Australia.
And then there are the cryptogeographica, places such as Kadath, Carcosa, Hobbiton, Narnia, Hy-Brasil, Hell and such whose existence has not been satisfactorily proven.

C'mon. People here believe in a hollow Earth, Spaceship Guys kidnapping people and poking them in the butt, and aircraft exhaust as a massive poison spray plot. Some people will believe anything.

I believe I'll have another beer.

Probably that people who still believe that the earth is flat have their head flat... Just as well as those who think it is hollow have their head hollow!

nox, I was going to post that info as well but I think that site is meant as a joke. It claims several states don't even exits.

Also note that Thomas Dolby (She Blinded Me With Science) has a fan club called The Flat Earth Society or something like that. Named after an album (pre-cd days) or song.

ask the flat earth guy what he thinks of the hollow earth thory. should be good for a laugh.

The earth isn't flat, it's curved! I have seen it my self from all my trans-atlantic flights

Seriously, there is ENOUGH proof that the earth is round, look at other cellestial bodies, the standard is spherical....

I honestly think that the hollow earth theory is more believable..still not believable for me...
