These Ads Suck, ATS!

Am I the only one that is growing tired of having to wade through the obnoxious advertising that apparently keeps this site afloat???

Isn't it about time that whoever runs this thing finds a better way to monetize?

I HATE all these ads, and I believe they are actually earning the site owner less money than if they used more subtle placement. Why? Because if you continue to bombard your audience with videos on the right side of the ******* screen, they immediately become trained to just click out every single time they see that video window appear.

When advertising becomes too intrusive, people tune out entirely.

Also, please stop making these video ads play sound automatically. I hate the video ads enough already (the ones that start out muted). Please, only let them play sound if I click on the sound button.

Finally, to everyone who comes in here and says, "Flash Block Plugin. Solved." I say, "No." Because I want to access ATS on lots of different computers, some of which are public or work-related and do not allow me to add browsing plugins. Furthermore, IT ISN'T THE POINT. The point is that the advertising on this site is the most intrusive and obnoxious of any site I regularly visit.

This is one of the main reasons I stopped coming to ATS. I stop by off and on, but leave again because it's just too distracting with those ads. A few of my colleagues feel the same. There are plenty of other similar sites to discuss these topics.

I only get that video when I first log in. I never look at the front page, instead I click on new or recent topics then it doesn't come up anymore.

To me its no big deal when you put it in perspective. Go look at that thread about the little girl surrendering to a camera man, to me it kind of puts 'annoying adds' way down on the priority list.

Okkkk... not sure I agree with that concept, but how much do I have to pay to stop seeing ads?

Pity those of us who can't afford a contribution at the moment can't have ATS in the background because the freakin' ad keeps playing... I understand the need for advertising but isn't there a better way????

Your deffinately not alone. Im all for the site owners making a buck to support this site..

But when I log to ATS on my laptop; it responds like a drug whore over dosing.. so slow and barely responsive until the ads kick in, my laptop can adjust, then I can get normal speeds until something else pops out of nowhere..

The site is amazing! The ads... not so much

Not my site though. . . And I know the financial support is needed to keep it going.

Works great on my mobile though!

The automatic video/audio ads are what kill me. It's now standard procedure for me to immediately close any web page that does that kinda thing and (if I remember) never go back. This is what is called "forcing it down your throat", and I'm getting a little damn sick of encountering that attitude everywhere I go.

I noticed this happen on the ATS Live page the other day and my heart sank. Really, guys? I understand the (perceived) necessity for advertising, but do you really have to use one of the most intrusive forms you could think of? It seems like almost every website I visit has a video that automatically loads and plays (AT FULL VOLUME). It's either a self-promo or, of course, a third-party advertisement.

The list of websites I visit is, needless to say, dwindling rather quickly. I don't need to wait for what happens with Net Neutrality to find out how my relationship with the internet is going to end up--I'll probably stop using it, almost altogether, by the time those idiots even make a decision.

ATS will remain (for now) one of the few sites I visit and contribute to, simply because it's the best of it's kind out there. Which kinda sucks, because I can no longer leave the Live page open in the background while doing other things because the advertisements start shoving themselves down my (and everyone else within earshot) throat.

I guess I'm just not cool enough to where I don't have to look at them. Whatever.

So the more you post the less ads you see?

So it's quantity over quality?

I don't like the ads automatically playing sound, so the solution to that is to wildly post everywhere regardless of whether I have anything to say or not until it stops?

Great idea ATS, pardon me, I have every thread on ATS to go derail.

Actually, not quite.

While post-count is one factor, the WATS score is what determines how many ads logged-in members will see… flags and stars being the most important.

a reply to: SkepticOverlord I don't mind the ads per se, but the automatic sound that accompanies them. I support the site and I want it to be profitable for those who brought it to us but I don't want a 3am ATS session to accidently wake my daughter or my (fat, ugly,bitchy soon to be ex) wife.

First question: why are you logging out?

Second question: which ads do that? When I review our ads, that never happens for me. All are providers are not supposed to auto-play sounds. If one is, we remove it.
